Iran's Revolutionary Guard is reporting seven ships have been damaged by explosions in the Gulf region.
It comes eight months into the war with the US, with diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz still stalled.
It says IRGC naval forces hit four vessels that were sailing in the northern Gulf on Wednesday.
It accused them of being involved in illegal oil transfers
Iran says another three vessels struck mines in the Strait of Hormuz overnight and caught fire.
The IRGC has warned its response could extend to US bases in the region if Washington continues to encourage ships to transit the mined waterway.
Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Vall reports from Tehran, Iran.
