Iranian state media are reporting explosions across southern Iran, including on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and in the cities of Bandar-e-Jask, Sirik and Bandar Abbas.
Al Jazeera’s Rasul Serdar, reporting from Tehran, says the IRNA state news agency reported explosion-like sounds but did not say it was an attack. Soon after, an Iranian news agency said the explosions came from Iranian missiles fired by the armed forces flying over Bandar Abbas. Serdar says this suggests an Iranian test, military exercise or show of readiness for a new round of war, but there is no confirmation from the US or Iran that any attack has happened.
Serdar says the situation is extremely delicate, and that the concern is that back-and-forth attacks could ignite a new round of war.
