Putin says Russia's new elite will come from veterans of his war against Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, these men are destined to become the country's future leaders, role models, and pillars of the state.

But a video from the village of Babstovo in Russia's Jewish Autonomous Region offers a rather different picture. The footage shows two servicemen from Russia's 69th Brigade struggling to communicate coherently. Their performance raises questions about the people being celebrated as the future of Russia and the Kremlin's decision to treat participation in the war as a mark of elite status. So much for Putin's new aristocracy. The Kremlin calls them heroes, future leaders, and the country's new elite, but the footage tells a very different story.
