Russia wants to fight through the winter to make Ukraine suffer | News in Depth

As Washington, Moscow and Beijing explore the possibility of a broader deal on Ukraine, Europe fears being left on the sidelines. The leaders of Norway and Finland recently spoke with Vladimir Putin, but reports suggest the Russian president spent much of the conversation lecturing them on his own version of Russian history. In News in Depth, Stuart Dowell, Political Editor at TVP World, argues that it remains unclear whether the Kremlin took the call seriously at all. The conversation also exposed differences within Europe, as Denmark's prime minister reacted critically to the initiative while other governments backed the outreach.

According to Dowell, the planned talks in Abu Dhabi, if they take place, are unlikely to deliver a breakthrough. In his view, Putin still believes time is on Russia's side and intends to use Moscow's advantage in the air war to inflict further suffering on Ukraine throughout the winter.
