Biggest mistake Western Europe made is by thinking that just because Soviet Union broke down, there is no more threats coming from what was left as Russia. Putin from the start of him ruling Russia has shown that he did not like the destruction of the Soviet Union. As Western powers, what do you do when you hear a man like that speak in that tone? Do you buy his oil and gas so that your money you give to Putin goes to his military or do you look other places to get oil and gas where your money does not become the bullet that one day kills your children? All European leaders did just that since 2000. Germany itself with gas via Baltic Sea. The same thing can be said with China. You are building China today but wait for it till it have a 10 million army of soldiers and then look how it will threaten Europe via North pole and America via Pacific.
