Previous U.S. administrations have actually kept Europe from rearming | News In Depth

As Europe responds to growing hybrid threats and prepares for a reduced U.S. role on the continent, are the European members of NATO bracing to establish an alternative to the transatlantic alliance?

“What we are heading towards is not to duplicate the existing NATO, which has been a very successful military alliance, but we are rather looking into strengthening the European pillar in NATO,” TVP World’s Europe Editor Marcin Zaborowski told News in Depth.

“That is something which a number of European nations wanted for a long time, something which formerly American administrations were opposing,” he said. “And ironically, the current American administration is in favor of actually NATO becoming more European because that means shifting a certain burden onto the shoulders of Europeans so that they are able to take care of their own security and defense.”

At the same time, U.S. military facilities in Europe could become targets, as exemplified by the recent abortive terror plot targeting a U.K. airbase hosting U.S. fighter jets.

“That means that other areas of American presence in Europe, including those in Italy, in Denmark, in Poland may also be targeted,” Zaborowski said. “And that obviously puts a particular responsibility on the side of the host nations here to make sure that the American presence is not becoming the prime target of the next wave of hybrid attacks.”

Join News in Depth’s Don Arleth and his guest as they explore how Europe can respond to hybrid warfare, what a reduced U.S. military presence could mean for NATO, and how governments can counter Russian sabotage without escalating tensions.
