My fav John Oliver joke was an unhinged joke he told about Senator Kennedy while referencing JFK's untimely ending. It was breathtaking, as in immediate laughter, as in shock and also as in a gut punch.

I've never simultaneously laughed while thinking 'for your safety please don't say that again ever' lol.

Trevor Noah is such a coward ! Educated, well-travelled and a bounty bar all around. Some would say "he knows his place". Forever the entertainer, jester of the court. No real bite, just a crowd pleaser. He knows it too. J. Oliver is nothing but a gentleman (even if from Liverpool) in the proper sense of the word. There aren't a whole lot of us in the US that do, but a few took a second (some nutjobs even tried third and fourth) language(s). South African more often sounds like English filtered through Dutch/Afrikaans, Australian and New Zealand to me are almost the same and there are like 4 or 5 canonical british(? whatever the "main" islands are called) accents. I love liverpudlian... especially when somebody is goofing on a Beatle.

I liked Eugene's view about football. It does seem like men who enjoy the company of other men, and watching men, not women's football, and enjoying the competitiveness and rivalries of their chosen teams/tribes more than appreciation of any skills technique or artistry, because it confirms their macho masculinity and it doesn't matter to them that such rivalry leads to football hooliganism.

I just wanted to say that I actually agree with Eugene (to an extent) about true fans of a sport watching games regardless of the gender of the athletes. Sure, in some cases it might seem less exciting to watch because of the differences in execution (a commonly used example is women's basketball, but I don't watch any basketball so I can't say either way). But, I will argue back that women's tennis is WAY more exciting to watch than men's (most of the time, there are always exceptions). And in the US, the women's professional soccer team is FAR more successful than the men's. So.... John Oliver (a man I deeply respect and admire), since you're an American, give the women's team some love!

I agree with JO. Eugene is right about FIFA but wrong about football, except when he’s right about football: 1934/1978 World Cups, football under dictatorships, the multiple match fixing scandals, pay to play. But the game is itself is too unpredictable to be staged, and the massive conspiracy would be too huge to control.
