It's a mess, a Gordian knot which no amount of military force can resolve. Count all the parties involved in the larger scale:<br>The US and Israel attack Iran, but can't defeat Iran. Another round will fail, and the fallout will be on the GCC. Trump is severely weakened as he's going to be investigated thoroughly at home. Bibi may also be out if the opposition coalition is called to form government; with the Arab party support they may have the votes. Its expansionist project in the Middle East is coming to nothing; all those gains from veiled or open recognition from Muslim states have been effectively nullified. It American popular support is waning, so American politicians will eventually follow suit.<br><br>Iran is trying to avoid another round, but it won't give in on its central demand that the blockade be lifted. It very likely has been working to raise its ability to strike American naval vessels as well as Diego Garcia, the only US supply point. That would be devastating. It would also strike the GCC infrastructure, and Israel. The damage could be enormous. Iran can't win, but it also won't lose. Push this any further and acquiring nuclear weapons becomes almost a certainty. It will force Saudi to also go nuclear. And maybe Turkey.<br><br>The GCC sits in the middle, curiously unable to act decisively. It doesn't want to be attacked, but at the same time it doesn't want to completely shut down its US security connection, as weak as it may be proving to be. But in my mind there is nothing the GCC can do except go settle matters with Iran and downgrade the American presence within its borders.<br><br>Russia wants to remain relevant in the region. Helping Iran is the major opening, but Russia has the problem it started the other war against Ukraine which it cannot win, and is suffering its effects. The more Russia is seen as Iran's lifeline the more it will incur US and European hostility, translated into more help for Ukraine. Putin can't keep playing the Trump game when Trump himself is in deep trouble at home.<br><br>China is trying to sit out this whole game of magical chairs, but inevitably it has to help Iran, covertly or not, because the exposed US vulnerabilities are just too good to be ignored. But it doesn't want Iran nuclear armed just the same. Enough of nuclear armed states around its entire border: Russia, India, N Korea, and now Iran -- with Japan not far behind. You see the problem.<br><br>Where do you start to unravel this entire knotty mess. My guess is the US backing off and taking Israel with it. The GCC makes a deal with Iran. There is no other starting point really.
