There needs to be a massive overhaul in justice system. These women are getting away with quite literally murder. She's going to serve 9 years and then she'll get to live out the rest of her meaningless life meanwhile, an innocent life was taken. The only right outcome for taking a life is giving a life. She should never have the chance to be free again.

She's 17? Already aged by alcohol and drugs. Wasted.

Why did her parents turn her loose with a car. Sounds like really bad parenting.

If you are old enough to drive you are old enough to know that you never drink alcohol if you are going to drive. Grow up and take the consequences of your selfish stupidity.

“I’m not dealing with this right now”. Spoken like an entitled brat who’s never been held accountable or faced any consequences in her life. What a waste of a human.

I keep thinking that parenting must be one of the hardest jobs. It's about instilling values and information in the child so they will make the best decisions. It would be harder when both parents are working paid jobs. If one parent is working and the other one is at home, it would make it easier to mould the child and importantly, know what they are thinking and up to. But the ability to be in that situation does depend on the economy and the jobs available. All I can say is that a young person just doesn't decide one morning to drive drunk. It's this whole series of factors and influence that has led up to it - who the young person has been listening and associating with, what media they consume, what interests and hobbies are taking up their mind, what they value.

She killed a woman because wantedplau music. My family would've disown me and beat down if I committed that crime and would never let me act or talk if I was drunk or not. The cops would be the only th8ng keeping me alive and conscious

The punishment for drunk driving must always be severe because it's an active choice to take that risk every time you get behind the wheel drunk.

"but she was just a teenager"
"it doesn't matter that she's an adult, 18 and 19 is still a teenager"
"at 19, your brain isn't fully devleoped"
"she was just in high school, like, a year ago"
"she can't even buy alcohol yet"
I'm being facetious, of course, but if you bristled even momentarily at these statements AND also have problems with young adults dating older adults, you are the problem. Yes, it is an aside, but it's relevant because everybody is undergoing brain development (according to the internet) until they commit a crime or in some other way displease society. For the record, she was an adult at the time of the crime. Full stop. She was responsible for actions as a member of the majority.
'And yes, I do argue the opposite: minors are minors until 18. full stop. It doesn't matter how heinous the crime. They should not be handled in adult court. The rest of the world, mostly, gets it, but not people in the US who will immediately "forget" the brain science they are quick to cite when convenient for them. I wonder for the people who hold these contradictory beliefs (assuming they have any self-awareness) whether they are conscious of the amount of lying to themselves they need to do to build these cases.

This is heart breaking. "I have a 24 year old son with down syndrome at home who's waiting for his mother to come home." She seemed like a great person, I hope everybody is able to find peace.
