european union decided to stop importing cheap natural gas from Russia and claim that they have steady supply. it is true that they have another supplier. the problem is, the new supplier selling their natural gas in price higher than what russian set. so gas price in european union then increased. what happened next? as you can see, factories in european union began to colapsing one by one. even ginats such as Volkswagen can't escape from that.

singapore buying indonesian gas at a bargaining price, much cheaper than other supplier. the same case as european union with russia. now singapore buying more expensive gas from other supplier. the same move as european union. so, will singaporean economy facing companies announcing their bankruptcy like european union? judging on how price in singapore are already so much high right now, the chance for singapore to experiencing the same fate as european union is actualy quite high

AI: If Indonesia so stupid to play this card, : Over the medium to long term, Indonesia would lose the most in economic terms. Singapore can, at a higher cost, reroute its supply chains globally—buying seaborne LNG from Australia/Qatar, sourcing food from Malaysia, Thailand, or Australia, and redirecting its investment capital toward Vietnam, Malaysia, or India.
In contrast, Indonesia cannot easily replace the US$15B+ in annual investment flows, the maritime refining capacity that keeps its domestic transport network fueled, or the sophisticated financial-legal bridge that Singapore provides to global markets.”

When a minister paid at the top tier of global compensation acts surprised that a sovereign neighbor pulled a legal trump card, it treats Singaporeans like we have zero commercial literacy.
Every standard long-term gas supply contract held by GSPL and Sembcorp through 2028 is written with explicit "Change in Law" and "Government Directive" clauses. When Indonesia’s upstream regulator enforces Article 8 of their Oil and Gas Law to prioritize domestic grids, the supplier isn't breaching the contract—they are operating under an excused, legal curtailment built directly into the fine print. Pretending that our commercial entities can just "pursue recourse" through arbitration against a sovereign emergency mandate is either empty posturing or a refusal to read the contracts sitting on their own desks.
Waving around the "less than 2 per cent of total demand" stat is economic gaslighting. Power grids don't price electricity on averages; they price on the marginal unit. Knocking out cheap baseload piped gas forces generation units onto volatile spot LNG or emergency diesel during a strained global market, and that price shock gets blasted straight into business operating costs and household tariffs.
We watched this exact script play out with the historical sand and granite bans. Calling structural resource nationalism a sudden shock—and then telling people to keep calm while passing down the bill—shows a foreign and energy policy that keeps backing us into predictable corners. If the defense against a foreseeable geopolitical squeeze is just telling us the water is fine while the heater maxes out, maybe the accountability for the job needs a reality check too.

Dear Indonesia,
I would like to thank Indonesia for not burning more forest than they have this time round so that we, who are living in Singapore, can have another 10 months of "free oxygen" next year.
The rupiah has dropped to record low in 2026 and their stock market is facing potential downgrade in 2027 by MSCI index due to record foreign investments pulling out of Indonesia. In the midst of all these struggles, Indonesia government exhibits great foresight by reducing natural gas exports to Singapore as announced on 24 Oct 2026. Though this will further reduce Indonesia's ability to increase their foreign revenue and hence strengthen the rupiah, at least ordinary Indonesians can buy more cheap local gas for their daily use. Indonesia government under Prabowo, truly knows how to show care and concerns for everyday Indonesians.
Since Indonesia is not able to pay the debt to China for building the rail yet and having problems with controlling the "funds leakage" in their national free meal program, I hope that Indonesia considers letting Singapore help and work with the farmers to use non-slash-burn method next year. We wouldn't mind spending millions to give farmers the equipment to clear forest instead of letting them burn and create haze which will cost billions in Singapore's economy and people's health in return.
With Sarcasm,
From Singapore

The following are objective facts and the legal context regarding the points you raised:
1. Low Tuck Kwong’s Citizenship Status
Migration History: Low Tuck Kwong was born in Singapore on April 17, 1948. He moved to Indonesia in 1972 and established a construction company before eventually expanding into the coal mining industry through PT Bayan Resources Tbk.
Change of Citizenship: He officially became an Indonesian citizen through a naturalization process in 1992, not 1972.
Transfer of Shares: In August 2024, Low Tuck Kwong drew public attention after gifting approximately 22% of his shares in BYAN—valued at over IDR 101 trillion—to his daughter, Elaine Low, who is a Singaporean citizen. This move sparked public debate regarding the ownership of nationally strategic assets by foreign nationals.
2. Issues Concerning Forest and Land Fires
Regarding the causes of forest fires in Indonesia, scientific and legal analyses point to a combination of several key factors:
Climatic Factors (El Niño): Extreme El Niño climate cycles lead to prolonged droughts, reduce soil moisture, and render peatlands and forests highly susceptible to catching fire—even from the smallest spark.
Human Activity: The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and the police, has repeatedly taken firm action—including naming individuals (workers) and corporations (such as palm oil and industrial timber plantation companies) as suspects—when they are found to have cleared land through illegal burning (slash-and-burn practices). Law Enforcement against Corporations: The Indonesian government has consistently taken action—ranging from sealing off land and revoking business licenses to filing civil lawsuits seeking trillions of rupiah in damages—against large corporations, whether domestic or those affiliated with foreign capital (including entities from Singapore and Malaysia), that have either been negligent or have deliberately allowed fires to occur on their land.
3. Financial Regulation and International Capital Flows
Singapore’s Financial System: As a global financial hub, Singapore enforces strict regulations against money laundering and terrorism financing under the supervision of its monetary authority (MAS). Nevertheless, it is undeniable that its geographical location and attractive tax incentives have led many business owners from various countries, including Indonesia, to hold assets or establish holding companies there.
The Indonesian Government’s Response: To optimize state revenue and prevent capital flight, the Indonesian government has implemented various policies, such as a tax amnesty program, the signing of international agreements on the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI), and mandates requiring that foreign exchange earnings from exports (DHE) be deposited domestically.

Did I not tell y'all? People screaming "just seize their assets" don't understand basic economic asymmetry. With billions tied up as Indonesia's top investor and Jakarta's history with sand and gas bans, state confiscation just invites counter-seizures on our investments over there. The toothless THPA isn't an oversight, it's just swallowing a hard reality.
Flexing that we have stored gas completely misses the point too—it's the cost shock hitting our power grid and local businesses when supply gets squeezed. And a foreign policy that keeps backing us into these corners is a wreck. Honestly, when our ministers are pegged to the top 1,000 earners, paying world-highest base salaries just to shrug and accept this outcome is a joke.
