As haze continues to affect parts of Southeast Asia, many people are wondering when they should wear a mask and which air quality readings matter most. Professor Rajasekhar Balasubramanian, Keppel Chair in Sustainability Solutions at the National University of Singapore, tells CNA's Asia First what healthy adults should watch for and ways to reduce exposure when air quality deteriorates. He also discusses Indonesia's efforts to tackle the fires and why sustained rainfall is key to easing the haze across the region.

I'd sprinkle water on mask or handkerchief before wearing them.

The PSI is irrelevant whether it is high or low PM 2.5 concentration. Just wear N95 mask to protect yourself as it can enter our blood stream and cause problems in later life. Once inside our body it cannot be expelled and will accumulate over time.

6:55 Something to do with concentration of particles here. It can be the same type of particles and smoke but concentration does matter a lot

5:49 I still have a question for this professor, technically the fans will draw in air as they're turned on. Sure they'll disperse the PM2.5 particles but what about the incoming air that's drawn in? The most I'll get is air particles circulating around my entire room(cuz regular fans don't have filters)

Not like there's enough haze counter masks on stock to buy, everyone's snatching it now.
Let's not forget Influenza strand type A spreading right now so a standard mask is better than nothing at this point

It's not polite for the newscaster to have pointed his finger at his guest
