Trump’s brilliant combination. Soon, European losers will be buying diesel fuel in the US at triple the price, even though, in fact, it will be Russian diesel. As always, Europeans will be left out in the cold and will pay dearly for their foolishness.

Every EU neighbouring country should be encouraged to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, respect the Helsinki Final Act, comply with applicable international agreements on the peaceful use of outer space, and support a free, open and secure internet.

Relevant frameworks include the European Convention on Human Rights, the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, the EU NIS2 and Critical Entities Resilience Directives, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism, and the EU Strategic Compass for Security and Defence.

However, do the existing instruments provide a sufficiently comprehensive framework for security, peaceful cooperation, cyber resilience and civil protection between the EU and its neighbours? Where significant gaps remain, the EU and its neighbouring countries should develop a new European agreement on peaceful neighbourhood, mutual security and civil preparedness, with clearly defined commitments and mechanisms for cooperation.

Those who reject these principles may pose a potential security threat.

In a hostile security environment, preparedness is essential. Our policies must be designed to ensure our survival, resilience and ability to defend our societies against external threats.
