China’s Pinglu Canal officially opened on Wednesday (Sep 16), marking the completion of one of the country’s biggest transport infrastructure projects in decades. The 134km canal gives southwestern China a new route to the sea via the Beibu Gulf. For goods from the region, it can shorten the inland waterway journey to the sea by more than 560km compared with the route via Guangzhou. CNA looks at why the mega project matters for trade and logistics in southwestern China and its links to Southeast Asia and global markets.
