The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa has held a mass meeting with management at pharmaceutical giant, Adcock Ingram, following plans to close its general plant division in Clayville.
The division, which manufactures popular over-the-counter products, including Citro-Soda, was recently under scrutiny over safety concerns.
Adcock Ingram has now served the union with a Section 189 retrenchment notice, affecting up to 250 employees.
GIWUSA has rejected the retrenchment notice, arguing that the financial losses cited by Adcock Ingram lack transparency, and cannot justify stripping hundreds of workers of their livelihoods.
