Major General Siddiq Abdel Rahman Ander says he joined the war believing he was fighting for a united Sudan. Now he is breaking with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and urging others to do the same.
Ander headed RSF unit Group 15 and led the Sudan Liberation Forces for Reform and Development. In an exclusive video obtained by Al Jazeera English, he announces his withdrawal from the RSF and Tasees Alliance. He says it became clear they were serving a family-based project controlled by Hemedti’s relatives.
His departure comes amid other defections, including Sudan Shield Forces commander Abu Aqla Keikal in October 2024, Major General Al-Nour Ahmad Adam in April and Brigadier General Ali Rizgallah in May. Mohammad Azrag Al-Fanjari said he defected with nearly 300 fighters and 30 vehicles. The total number is unclear.
Al Jazeera’s Al-Miqdad Al-Ruhaid reports from Khartoum, Sudan.
