LFI n'est pas un parti révolutionnaire, ni même d'extrême gauche (Mitterand avait un programme bien plus à gauche). C'est un parti réformateur, et le seul dont l'esprit est encore fidèle à la véritable gauche. Les polémiques à son sujet sont le résultat d'accusations mensongères de la part de l'extrême droite. Il fut le premier parti à dénoncer les attaques israéliennes sur la population palestinienne, et leurs adversaires en ont profité pour prétendre que cette position était antisémite. Mélenchon n'a jamais été condamné pour antisémitisme, parce que ces accusations ne reposent sur rien de tangible.
