PSG beating Barca used to mean something now neither team really cared apart from personal pride. It is worse in every way no discussion needed. There is zero reason to pay attention or watch a good 80% of the games. Way too diluted for money sake and not competition.
don't lose sight of the fact that the entire revamp of the european cup in the first place was to prevent the formation of the superleague by giving the big clubs what they want. they want to make sure they go to europe every season and they get to play each other regularly. more matches means more revenue. they will probably meet one or two of the other big clubs in the league games, which is good because people want to watch them play one another but the result won't be so critical that losing that game will knock them out of the tournament. 99% they going to qualify for the next round anyway if they beat the smaller clubs. of course doing well in the league means your passage in the KO state is easier but not so critical that you are going to be completely out. is it mundane? well, i bet you these pundits will be complaining and whining even more if we revert back to the old format where the big clubs could get knocked out and the finals might be between nottingham forest and malmo or red star belgrade and marseilles
If it in groups or a league phase, i can see where they can be same yet different, 1st to 8th are the previous group stage winners
9th to 16th are the previous group stage runners up
17th to 24th are the previous group 3rd places, which would had qualified for the Europa league, this is only 2 additional matches to those of equivalent strength, if you 1 of those 16 in the play offs, you still have to qualified to the last 16, team finish 1st to 8th don't face each other in the last 16 if we count these as the previous 1st group stage and face a team from 9th to 24th, which be the previous 2nd and 3rd place and Uefa could had implemented knock-out play off in the previous system with 2nd vs 3rd.
As this system doesn't use a double round robin and faces 8 different oppoents a single table helps and make it easier, uefa could expand it to 8 group games while keeping the 8 group by pairing up groups and play a DRR from the team in the same Pot. There wasn't any jeopardy in the last edition, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool etc still made it out of the group stages on regular occasions.
it's more boring, for sure. I used to be aware of the groups, tune in to watch certain matches knowing the situation of that group, but now it's such a mess I don't even follow what games are coming up, I just wait until the knockout rounds now. Even when you do get big teams playing each other, the stakes are lower early on so what's the point
