Visitors to Sentosa can soon ride on autonomous vehicles from early next year. The vehicles may skip stops, taking visitors to their destinations faster. Eventually, there will be 27 pick-up and drop-off points at key places such as hotels, beaches and attractions. The pilot will start with two vehicles in the western part of the island. Each vehicle can carry up to eight passengers and there will be a safety operator on board for now. The rides can be booked through TADA's platform and will be free during the trial.
Sentosa is a testing ground for this because it acts like a controlled environment. It basically offers the "almost dedicated lanes and specialized infrastructure" that one transport minister pointed out as necessary for autonomous vehicles to scale safely. Because the island's roads are vastly vacant compared to chaotic traffic, the shuttles only operate under highly artificial conditions—meaning it is likely self-driving with a driver beside during the trial.
