Are Europe’s AI ambitions and economic growth strategy creating new dependencies on the United States? Ex-EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and DW's Kai Steinecke join Max Hofmann at the Berlin Global Dialogue for this week’s Berlin Briefing.
As Germany deepens cooperation with Nvidia and Europe searches for new partners around the world, the question is whether Europe can become more competitive and more independent at the same time? Or is strategic dependence simply the price of staying in the race?

As an old US/Swiss citizen, I find this amusing. Europeans endlessly criticize the US, until they come to points where they realize they rely on the US (e.g., defense, technology transfer, etc.). It's a very bad look for Europe, because it makes Europeans look selfish and childish. While I loathe Trump, the one benefit is that he seems to have finally inspired Europe to take care of itself-- something long overdue. And when that happens, the US will be a better -- not worse -- partner because it will be balanced.
There is no “Far Right” taking over in EU countries, it’s just normal people who see the failures of socialist ideology and governments not delivering. The people are voting for change and abandoning old ideas are the first steps to recognizing the problems and making progress towards a better future.
How can Europe compete when its cost of production is so high… e.g. it takes Europe $30k-$40k to make a car & probably the same in the USA … but China & maybe later India can produce a car for $15k-$20k … & worse, Europe allows these Chinese made cars & EVs in Europe .. but the USA tariffed them so high that you can’t see a single Chinese EV on US roads/highways … that is just one example … high cost of energy, labor, regulations & all. Eventually, European industries will close & collapse & Europe will just be nations of service providers, waiters & waitresses, tour guides, drivers while all buying the rest of the world’s products. China, India, Vietnam etc, will be the producers of the goods of the World!!!
Europe needs to 1 grow a backbone and 2 stop treating innovation like a side quest when it is what will make it relevant for the decades to come. The woman in red completely missed the point, Europe needs to think long term strategically and plan its capabilities and have VISION and leadership who are not afraid to compete in all domains.
US needs to take off many of the pointless safeties on intelligence, further reduce energy regulation, permit the data centers, permit the nuclear plants, and double down on space, robotics, and SI. Full speed ahead.
Yes, Europe can be independent from depending on USA, and also have the money to achieve AI high tech! Today many AI experts and high tech elites in USA are looking forward to immigrate to Europe, simply because of USA’s high living cost and expensive medical care. Head-hunting those experts is the best strategy to start with!!!
climate change worries will lead europe to a clean bankruptcy these pundits are clueless and dont know what it takes to build a company. funding in europe is a joke the US spends 100's of billions on technology ea h year. the europeans regulate the americans innovate
Someone may defy human laws and escape justice for a time, but no one—not even the most powerful—is above the laws of nature. You may evade human judgment, but you cannot escape the consequences forever. Nature does not forgive, does not forget, and makes no exceptions for the guilty.
Europe needs to pay their bills and quit blaming the US. The 2 guests are lost. They worry about US tech but scream when we talk of taking our military assets for other theaters.
Can Europe really become more independent while relying on American technology and security guarantees? <br>And what's the one thing Europe would need to achieve true strategic autonomy? Let us know what you think 👇
France should invite influential figures from French society to appear on television and share their ideas on how to address the protests (with each person given 10 minutes to speak).
<br>- The military should be deployed to secure businesses and government buildings (to prevent the vandalism of shops and the looting of merchandise).
When you see how various big and populous European countries (Spain, France, Italy) hesitate when it comes to supporting Ukraine, it's honestly no wonder that many rather small countries don't entirely trust the European defense project.. In the end, this all is to the detriment of the said big countries, because they could quite easily replace the US as our principal security partner if they really wished to.
Over regulation and punitive taxation are the biggest hindrance to EU<br>"tech sector" business.<br>The only reform the EU is interested in is the gleichshaltung of national laws. <br>EU companies haven't a hope in the global market.
Ironically, capitalizing early stage companies can be achieved in 5 minutes by changing the tax code to more favorably treat risk-takers? Oh.. Silence..
The USA and CHINA are the only ones really innovating. And you cant depend on china because theyll TAKE OVER YOUR COUNTRY!!! <a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/b8IfY7zOK9iVkNAP_I2A-AY"></a><a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/b8IfY7zOK9iVkNAP_I2A-AY"></a> So people turn to the USA!! At least the AMERICANS let you keep your country!!! We crushed the german military and japan and guess what, THEY STILL GOT THEIR OWN COUNTRY EVEN THO USA OBLITERATED THEIR MILITARIES IN THE SAME YEAR!!! <a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/KsIfY6LzFoLM6AKanYDQAg"></a><a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/KsIfY6LzFoLM6AKanYDQAg"></a><a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/KsIfY6LzFoLM6AKanYDQAg"></a> YOU THINK CHINA WOULD HAVE LET YOU KEEP YOUR COUNTRY LOL <a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/b8IfY7zOK9iVkNAP_I2A-AY"></a><a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/b8IfY7zOK9iVkNAP_I2A-AY"></a><a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/b8IfY7zOK9iVkNAP_I2A-AY"></a> BETTER STICK WITH THE GOOD OLE USA!!!! <a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/G8AfY6yWGuKuhL0PlbiA2AE"></a><a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/G8AfY6yWGuKuhL0PlbiA2AE"></a><a href="UCkszU2WH9gy1mb0dV-11UJg/G8AfY6yWGuKuhL0PlbiA2AE"></a>
