You cannot sustain economic apartheid indefinitely and then act surprised when a generation excluded from prosperity responds with rage. What gets dismissed as Gen Z entitlement may simply be the accumulated frustration of young people surrounded by conspicuous wealth but denied any meaningful prospect of attaining it. The riots are a warning of what can happen when wealth is concentrated in the hands of a politically protected cabal while the majority remain economically disenfranchised. The gauche exhibitionism of wealth online, coupled with the political indifference of those who possess it, has only intensified these resentments. The old arrangement of balkanized social classes, in which the wealthy could insulate themselves from the deprivation around them, holds little purchase with a generation that witnesses these inequalities in real time. Social media has collapsed the distance between privilege and deprivation without narrowing the economic gulf between them.

It is quite remarkable that, at this very moment—just as France and Italy have decided to take the initiative and launch their own mission in Lebanon following the expiration of the UNIFIL mandate in December—such large public gatherings are taking place in both of these countries. UNIFIL is being weakened because the United States and Israel have blocked an extension of its mandate within the Security Council. Should UNIFIL withdraw, there would be no independent observers left in Lebanon. It is therefore easy to imagine who is, to put it mildly, not at all pleased that France is attempting to fill this void... 🤔

I think France needs to implement a national law to prevent the looting of shops during protests or strikes and to stop rioters from looting and damaging businesses, such as shops and restaurants.

How can a protest gain enough public support to pressure the government into making changes if the movement itself shows no willingness to stop rioters from looting and pillaging shops owned by the very people whose support it is supposed to win? Do they really think that those who have lost their livelihoods to riots associated with the protests will support their cause simply because the protesters 'have a valid point'? Do they really think they can shield their movement from any responsibility for the violence simply by saying, 'They're just a small minority, and we don't agree with them'?
