As the international context becomes more challenging for the European Union, the bloc is looking to boost its ties with like-minded allies. Canada is part of that architecture that the EU says it wants to build. The big news of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's State of the Union speech in September was that Canada could become an associate member – an arrangement that does not exist for the EU's partners at the moment.
The EU-Canada summit, set to take place at the end of October in Montreal, might provide some clues as to what this enhanced relationship will look like. We delve into the topic with two MEPs.

As a Canadian, my hope is that Canada and the EU can cooperate closely to reduce their over-reliance on the US in defence, payments infrastructure, technology infrastructure, AI development, managing AI risks, intelligence, space assets, energy, and supporting the international rules based order. The current US administration has highlighted the risks of depending too much on the US in these areas, but the risks will continue to exist due to the chaotic nature of domestic US politics no matter who controls the House, the Senate, and the White House. <br>We don't need full EU membership to work together in these areas, but some formalization of approach would help the EU and other nations to build a broader coalition that can work together to enhance their security in an increasingly risky world.

Canada will need America's protection because EU is trying to steal our resources.

Exports from Canada to the US have already fallen to 66.3% this year, compared to 71.7% of total experts last year and 75.9% the year before. So, the shift is already well underway. Furthermore, unbeknownst to many, only ~15% of Canada's total GDP (using the proper value-added number) is the entire trade slice with the US (including all exported energy). There is great freedom for deeper integration between Canada and European partners, and this must primarily be driven by the defence of a value system that is currently under attack by certain superpowers, including the U.S., who can no longer be seen as a reliable partner by anyone. That there will also be economic benefit to both sides is obvious, if approached properly (esp. around energy, critical minerals, lowered barriers in general, digital integration, defense, and student and worker exchange).

Canadian here. Canada has much more in common with Europe than it does with Amerika. Years ago, my wife and I travelled to France. She wanted to visi the Claude Monet Museum in Chiverney. I wanted to visit the British Military Cemetery in Bayeaux to pay my respects to my great uncle, who was buried there in 1944. I felt at home wherever we travelled.

Canada has massive natural resources and Europe has people and manufacturing. Both have similar cultures based on rule of law and respect for human rights. This could be a marriage made in heaven.

Europe and Canada are made for each other period. Canada never wanted independence from Europe. Europe discovered Canada back in 1000Ad with the Vikings followed by John Cabot in 1497. Think about that Europeans and Canadians built it all together even before Canada was a nation it lived as Europeans it fought as Europeans then Canadians were forced out by empire not by choice. Canada and Europe always had a wound that needed to be healed the family was cut. Not anymore Europeans and Canadians always strived to be together, no one had to ask the other for anything we show up for each other. Its simply time to unite the family, even the UK deserves back in we do not cut our own family out. We are stronger together without question the world fears our unity! Canadians and Europeans live simple lives, social lives we actually care about each other and our peoples our cultures and customs all of it held. Accents might have changed or lost but culture, history and tradition the bonds between the family always remained.

Why does Canada need a special membership to trade with the eu? Why can't the kings just sign agreements like normal people? Seems like it's political.tail.wagging as usual. "Look at us" 😂😂🎉🎉
