They said the industrial sector collapsed because "the educated people have left" and then said "we can't survive economically without migrants" without connecting those two facts, because anyone who doesn't want to live in a third world culture is considered "racist."

@melinajmp

I am surprised that the host kept this conversation within the unhelpful traditional left-right framework, and framing the AfD as a fascist threat. AfD is not a one-trick party, blaming, as Munchau claims, all of Germany's problems on immigrants. Germany's mainstream parties have simply opened the immigration door, meaning that many people who have entered the country are simply unvetted. The mainstream parties have run down nuclear power, and Mertz has offered to buy US weapons for Ukraine while telling Germans that the government cannot afford more on social welfare spending and that Germans need to work harder. The mainstream parties have also tried to use the undemocratic, technocratic trick of creating a "firewall" to keep their "fascist" opponents at bay. You don't have to be a Nazi to find such an outlook and the obsession with green politics outrageous. Indeed, the Nazis had no probllem at all with clamping down on democratic opposition.

Why do you peddle this nonsense the AFD are "far Right" . They are primarily conservatives who hold views that would be perfectly mainstream a few decades ago. The real extremists are the liberal Left who have decided to destroy a nation with a shared identity for multicultural , multiethnic BS and impoverishing Green policies. There is no real evidence that Germany would collapse without migrants...the reality is it will implode as it balkanises under the fragmentary stress of "diversity".

OMG where'd you get this guy LMAO???? The immigration is a false made up crisis-?!!!! What an idiot, then how does he explain afD massive popularity ... Because the people see the TRUTH! ??? duhhh

"Summary
The claim that the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) has no statistical or economic basis is factually inaccurate. Official German government data, including police crime statistics and fiscal budget records, document substantial fiscal costs and disproportionate representation of non-German nationals and asylum seekers in violent crime categories. The central debate is not over the existence of these numbers, but over how to interpret causality—whether the drivers are cultural and religious (the AfD position) or structural, demographic, and socioeconomic (the position of mainstream criminologists and critics).
Crime Statistics (PKS / BKA)
Official Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt / PKS) reports provide the core data cited by the AfD:
* Suspect Disparity: Non-German nationals make up approximately 15% of the general population but account for roughly 40% of all registered criminal suspects (excluding immigration-specific violations like unlawful entry).
* Violent Crime: In categories such as assault, knife crime, robbery, and sexual offenses, asylum seekers and specific foreign national cohorts (predominantly from Syria, Afghanistan, and North Africa) appear at rates several times higher per capita than native Germans.
* The Counter-Argument / Context: Mainstream criminologists and critics note that this cohort is heavily skewed toward young males (the demographic most prone to crime globally, regardless of nationality), disproportionately urban, and residing in high-stress, low-income environments. Reporting bias also plays a role, as incidents involving foreign nationals are statistically more likely to be reported to police by victims and witnesses.
Fiscal and Economic Impact
Economic modeling differentiates between high-skilled labor immigration and humanitarian asylum migration:
* Fiscal Cost: Federal, state, and local governments spend tens of billions of euros annually on accommodation, administration, integration courses, and welfare transfers (Bürgergeld) for asylum seekers and refugees. Studies from institutions like the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and Ifo show that low-skilled humanitarian immigration is a net fiscal negative over the life cycle, as tax receipts fail to offset public transfer payments and infrastructure strain.
* Labor Integration Lag: While employment rates for refugees who arrived in 2015–2016 have risen past 50% over a decade, a large proportion remain in low-wage sectors or receive top-up welfare support, resulting in lower average tax contributions than the domestic median."

I understand that immigration is important in Europe and also probably in the US and many other countries. What I don't understand is why immigration can't be managed sanely so that murders and mayhem are kept to an absolute minimum, and surely as a bonus, folks should assimilate the culture they are moving into instead of hijacking it. I am speaking of course about how it may be done in a civilized way. If it is going to be an attack and a complete makeover of the destination culture, then it would seem all bets are off and mayhem would likely be the result if history is any guide.
Germany trying to go green seems to have been a seriously grave error. Less so in other places maybe, and I'm being generous in that. But if you fear the coming winter then you have not managed the country's resources effectively. If the 'educated' have failed so profoundly in their policies, can you really question the folks that are willing to come in and fix these horrendous policy mistakes?
And I don't get the argument at all that insists the constiuents who voted this in are uneducated.
Is one party educated and the other not? Here in the US you might say that the left could be more educated, but you could also easily conclude that these college educated folks are deranged at best, and psychotic at worse. And many of them lean heavily to the latter. So education is not the only and perhaps not the most important measure of merit in the vote.
Anyway, interesting interview. Thank you!

It would be nice if you guys stopped repeating the old line about right wing party hating immigrant. Right wing parties hate uncontrolled “immigration” of people from incompatible cultures who have no intention of conforming to local norms of behaviour. Your kind peddles that exact propaganda of calling me every limitation as anti-immigrant. It’s so tiring. And a complete lie. And that is why right wing parties grow in popularity, because you guys can’t have an honest debate, without canceling culture and vilification of diverse opinions.

Older German here. The narrative is false. Germany would not be viable without immigration. Today, two-thirds of all migrants in Germany receive social welfare benefits and free housing. Everything has to be funded by the work of taxpayers. The most serious crimes and murders could be cut by 50 percent immediately if these people had never set foot in our country (figures from the Interior Minister). It costs 60 billion euros a year—money that is missing from the pension funds. Add to that the left-green energy policy, which costs 130 billion a year. By contrast, the Bundeswehr has received only 48 billion annually over the last few decades.

And there it is again - the political lie that illegal mass migration is vital to the German economy. What utter nonsense! This mass migration has more to do with the elites' paranoid fear of a strong, self-determined Germany than with the well-being of the country and its people; rather, they want to effectively breed out, dilute, and ultimately eradicate everything German! Beneficial, regulated immigration of skilled workers from abroad has absolutely nothing to do with invasive mass migration used as a weapon! Everyone should know that by now! 😐🇩🇪

This is some of the same bullshit. I hear in the United States. Illegal immigration does not help your economy. It’s a drain on your economy. Sure you might get some cheap labor in Restaurants and farming and maybe some manufacturing but you’re also pushing out you’re lower educated population from getting jobs. The vast majority of people in countries are not against immigration. They’re against illegal immigration. Immigration that is controlled where people assimilate to the culture and are educated and work hard or net positive to our societies. We appreciate these people. We don’t like our legal immigrants who are here that aren’t contributing to society in our social welfare programs. We don’t want people that don’t want to assimilate into our community. We don’t want people that don’t want to accept our culture. They are not a net positive to our society. Get it straight.

Munchau claims the right wing parties in Sweden and the Netherlands have failed. Nonsense. The reason the right wing won elections in these very left wing countries is because they ruined the economy with their overly generous welfare state and one terms of right wing government is not going to fix the systemic problems the left create over decades in power.

He also claims that immigrants are needed to sustain the economy and pay for pensions. First of all, the left's mass immigration policy has absolutely failed. The left elites such as Blair in England and his counterparts in the West of Europe flooded their countries with immigrants in the last several decades. How are their economies doing now? Immigration has failed economically - many of them are on welfare, defeating the purpose of adding to the economy, now housing is unaffordable because of the shortage due to migration. How are unskilled laborers in the west supposed to compete with immigrants who are being favored?

He doesn't mention Poland and Hungary (at least not 14 min into the interview) which are doing really well WITHOUT immigration. What these elites don't get is culture because they are multiculturalists - which is a euphemism for cultural wasteland. There is good reason to worry about the pensions because the boomers are retiring. But of course the left in charge for the last several decades did NOTHING about it, thinking mass immigration was the solution. Obviously wrong. Politicians on both sides - but especially the big government left - failed the citizens. The deomgraphics should have been addressed, policies created to encourage families, but the left has been on a cultural crusade focusing on feminism and anti-racism - and to prove how anti-racist they are, they brought in black and brown people from Islamic counties assuming this would not be either a cultural or economic problem. Typical of the left, completely untethered from reality. Now WE ARE PAYING for their playing out of Marxist fantasies.

At the very least, the public should have been told that they need immigrant labor (if that was determined by both sides to be true) and then asked the public if they wanted Islamists in their country - even temporarily - or would prefer to tighten their belts. The choice was made for them by those elites who consider themselves their "betters".

Never trust leftist elites such as Munchau. These people created the problems and now want to tell us how to fix them. Liars. They should not be platformed and listened to unless you want to shame them for destroying the west.
First of all, my view is any promising grade 9 student presented with the policies that undermined Germany industry (jobs and careers) could stitch together a turn-around; essentially, get choking government and EU regulations (the ideologue parasitic class) out of the way.
The fixes are as glaring as the misguided forces and crippling mistakes (e.g. all things energy) that gutted German industry.
Turn that around and young Germans will start reproducing again, because hope for decent futures for working families will rebound, not to mention, as would (related policy changes) likely correlate with safer streets, communities and cities; "not to mention" (as would) renewed revenue sources for the system (e.g.) social security, et al.
If the AfD can't sell and manage that, their surge of support is doomed.

I wonder what sources Munchau consults in order to inform himself about his own country? This interview is so full of misinformation and displays so much fundamental ignorance of the AfD's policies and German politics and even economics generally, I'm left almost flabbergasted. Just to take one obvious, flagrant example: the role of gas imports in German energy production: Munchau makes it sound as if the full stop of Russian gas imports since the Nordstream pipeline was sabotaged is insignificant for the economy. If so, why the frantic construction of LPG terminals in the Baltic Sea and massive imports of (much more expensive) LPG from the USA? OBVIOUSLY gas is essential to produce electricity for industry (and not just industry), especially in the winter months during the REGULAR periods of little or no sunshine and wind (Flaute). Munchau himself mentions the real risk of electricity shortages in the winter months. Data centres require massive amounts of electricity, which now (thanks to the "Energiewende", the transition to "renewables" and shutting down ALL nuclear power stations) has to come from power stations that can provide electricity reliably, day-in, day-out. Only fossil-fueled power stations are capable of that, which is why the coal-fired power stations are still absolutely necessary. The AfD is determined to reactivate the nuclear power industry and promote innovation in the area and re-introduce gas imports from Russia. Climate policy in Germany since Merkel has strangled industry. And: the AfD is NOT "anti-immigration", it is against mass, uncontrolled illegal immigration, especially when the illegal immigrants are uneducated, unskilled and unwilling to integrate, which is overwhelmingly the case. In fact, the massive influx is destroying German education, dragging it down ever further, as the most recent PISA results show all too depressingly. My impression is that Munchau is cynically and lazily relying on the fact that most viewers of Unherd are unable to inform themselves independently about Germany, because they can't read or comprehend German.

The BBC are in shock and have no idea why people would vote for a right wing party. Their only way to make sense of it is to insult the voters. She same as they did with Brexit voters. Their world news had the words “far right, extremists, Nazis” in one news bulletin. No counter balance. No analysis. Just pure shock that people could reject cultural Marxism.

Is it coincidental that when earlier generations benefitted from a strong economy there was low immigration, and subsequent generations are suffering from a weak economy since open borders were introduced. Wasn't mass immigration meant to improve the economy?
