Is Trump pushing Canada to cut its trade dependence on the US? DW News

Canada is looking for new investment and closer ties beyond the United States as its trade relationship with Washington deteriorates under President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is courting some of the world's biggest investors in Toronto while seeking closer ties with the European Union. But can Canada realistically reduce its economic dependence on its enormous neighbor?
More than 70% of Canadian trade is still tied to the United States, while Europe accounts for only a fraction of that. Trade expert Carlo Dade argues that Canada should be cautious about looking to Europe as the solution and says protecting US trade and expanding into the Indo-Pacific should be higher priorities.
We ask whether Donald Trump's trade policies are merely forcing Canada to navigate a difficult period or accelerating a historic reorientation of Canadian economic and foreign policy.

If Canada wants to reduce trade dependence on the US, where should it look first: Europe, the Indo-Pacific, or should protecting the US relationship remain the priority?
We, Canada has reduced exporting to the US. We are not going to totally eliminate trading with the US but less so and increase with other like minded countries.
I am not convinced the physical realities are fait accompli when it comes to future business decisions. A good example was mentioned by the guest – Australia, which has no adjacent neighbour yet has an economic output the same as Canada's.

I also think there is something to be said for investing in a country where there is not much chance of political uncertainty that leads to leveraging existing companies. A good example is Asian car manufacturers in the US. There is good incentive for European and Asian countries to have guaranteed supply.
We will always trade with the US, geography ensures that. What may happen is that the US will have to pay more, as we open up routes to other markets. The oil we ship to them is highly discounted, around 90% of our natural gas goes south, and again at a discount. If we do this right we will strengthen our East to West infrastructure, so that the new electricity coming online powers Western Canada, not the NE of the US. Oil will be moving to the West Coast, to Asia. Natural Gas may end up in Churchill, Manitoba and then onward to the EU. The US buyers will have to compete with other areas in the world for our resources. Life will continue to get expensive in the US.

I'm Canadian. My father viewed the US as the home of the heroes that liberated his concentration camp. My children view MAGA as a blend of the KKK & the Republic of Gilead that threatens their home. The US may have lost the trust of generations of Canadians.

I hope we'll remember for at least a century the risk of tying our fortunes to a single fickle hegemon.
Canada is a joke. They cant trade within their own providences. The USA trades at 85% within its self, state to state. The usa trades only at 15% with the world.
Trust has been BROKEN, we will still trade with the Americans, just that going forward We Canadians will NOT PUT ALL OUR Eggs in one BASKET , we have to remember US has a Federal election every 4 Years which can change @ the whim of the next US Administration.
Yes from Canada to being closer to EU. The biggest mistake in America is the Constitution's emphasis on RIGHTS, encouraging self-centeredness and arrogance (MAGA, oligarchs, racism, guns, etc.) -- not RESPONSIBILITIES toward others that trains empathy. I think after WW2, most Europeans feel the responsibility to act civilized (except the far "right"). -- My YDNA is Viking; I was born in US, but married a Canadian in 1964 and moved north, and my grandfather was a Scottish Canadian.
Canada can double its trade with everyone right now. 3-4-5 times and till not reach the single investment base like the USA. They are kidding themselves.... for instance. This is how Canadians are doing math. Canadian: "Our chinese exports jumped 30%"---- The facts: Canada exports only 4.6% of their total exports to china... so the increased 30% of a 4.6% piece. Big whup...
We'll never completely break away from the US. We cannot change geography. We've neglected to diversify and must catch up.

Our diversification will not be with the EU alone. It will also be with the wider Asia-Pacific, South-America, the Middle-East and even Africa.
Except for 1/64 Cherokee, the rest of my ancestors are from Europe, not the USA.
Please allow us to work together as adult countries with leaders who are sane.
Oh, and we really are polite, et une grande minorité de canadiens parle français aussi, donc venez nous voir!
Canada is not trillions in debt, it's getting there. Unlike the USA Canada can export energy, precious metals and more to support the local, house driven economy. It's happening and it's ok. When the USA goes busy many country will suffer then. That's why Canada is moving now. 🎉🎉
It doesn’t make sense to depend on one country for the bulk of our trade.

We still trade with the USA obviously but we need to look elsewhere to places more stable
