An alternative is to create a Nord-Hansa, inspired by the old European Hansa with cities around the Baltic Sea that created their own trade and security agreements.

This Nord-Hansa would consist of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland), Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), United Kingdom, and Canada. And we could also find a place for Faero Islands and Greenland.

This Nord-Hansa could discuss trade strategies, defense initiatives (like the existing Nordic Joint Expeditionary Force), and whatever is relevant for the group. Then the existing EU members (DK, SE, FI) could carry the message from Nord-Hansa to the EU. It would significantly increase the weight of Nordic interests in the EU.

Just accumulating titles and associateships means nothing to Canada. It neither solves any of the existing issues nor tries to address its internal matters. To date, it's own Provincial borders do not exercise free trade. The only benefit that we see in this is the likes of France having a bigger identity with the French speaking Quebec and that may only cause further dissention within Canada. It will amount to interference both politically and culturally. Only time will tell if EU is sowing the seed to create another monster. Meanwhile, nothing changes in trade with America, with the rest of the world's participation in their trade with Canada being miniscule. There will be some suffering for the time being but things will change and return to a different normal.

The video explicitly notes that if Canada were to join the EU, it would be a net contributor—meaning Canadian taxpayers would pay more into the EU budget than they receive in funding, effectively paying an ongoing membership bill to Brussels. Joining Europe's $150 billion SAFE defense initiative also involves contributing capital to access shared procurement loans.
Economically and geographically, paying Washington or meeting U.S. partnership terms would be far cheaper and more practical. The reason Ottawa pursues the European angle anyway comes down to leverage and domestic politics:
Avoiding U.S. Hegemonic Leverage: Canada's greatest strategic fear is total economic subordination to Washington. Because roughly three-quarters of Canadian exports go straight to the American market, Canadian leadership worries that giving in entirely to U.S. demands leaves them with zero bargaining chips. Looking to Europe is an attempt to buy an alternative customer base—even if it costs more.
The "Net Contributor" Cost: If Canada tied itself to the EU's financial structures, Canadian taxpayers would be subsidizing agricultural programs and infrastructure development across Southern and Eastern Europe. Paying the required 2% or 3% GDP directly into domestic defense modernization or joint North American NORAD upgrades keeps every dollar on the continent, directly protecting Canadian airspace and infrastructure.
Domestic Political Optics: For decades, Canadian politicians across the spectrum have used standing up to Washington as an easy way to score domestic political points. Paying into an international block like the EU is framed domestically as "building global alliances," whereas conceding to U.S. trade demands or defense cost-sharing is easily attacked at home as folding to American pressure.
Logistics Don't Care About Politics: Even if Canada pays hundreds of millions to secure defense seats and trade agreements in Brussels, crossing the Atlantic Ocean with bulk crude, critical minerals, and manufactured goods will always carry higher freight costs, regulatory friction, and shipping delays than moving freight across the U.S. rail and pipeline grid.
Ottawa is essentially willing to pay a premium to European institutions to purchase political counterweight against the U.S., even when direct partnership with Washington is the only arrangement supported by actual geography.
