How much power has Donald Trump really lost with the midterms — especially on the world stage? Retired US General Ben Hodges believes the election results are bad news for Vladimir Putin and could force Washington to rethink its approach to Ukraine. He also expects tougher congressional oversight of the Trump administration and questions whether Trump will now resume military operations against Iran.
DW's Ines Pohl spoke with the former commander of US Army Europe about Trump's weakened presidency, the consequences for Ukraine and Russia — and why Europe still cannot afford to rely entirely on Washington.

@0:20...'more reliable ally...' means you goin to pay the bill for dinner again right?
The next 2 years the usa will be even more self obsessed than before. Europe should keep both feet on the ground. We may see less us idiocracy coming our way, but we'lll also not be looking forward to a more supportive usa. So, keep going independant europe.
Así es . El oso está muy jodido y va a apretar las tuercas al payaso naranja. Ahora se verá hasta que punto esta la administración infectada y como se revolverá en su frustración Trump? 1991
Ben is a true professional. If I had my wish I would make him the Chairman of the joint chief of staff for USA. His words are wise and have terrific wisdom.
To answer the thumbnail question….”no.” I’ll add this, it’s an absolute shame that the European continent is concerned about an election that occurred on the North American continent basing their safety on the results. How about boosting the defense of your own continent instead of being so concerned about an election that has in reality nothing to do with you?
The European leaders who «didn’t stand up to» the evil, orange ogre in the White House look foolish, this man said. What a strange thing to say.
Who the f cares what our leaders say to the ogre?? He certainly doesn’t. It has absolutely no meaning or consequence if you flatter the ogre or talk sternly to him. None at all. So why bother?
Americans are way too concerned with this. Everything is a performance for those people.
It's good, but we shouldn't get carried away by the resilience of the American system because it is obviously not only flawed but bad. To have only two parties is a recipe to polarisation and a hopelessly undemocratic proposition when one party is dysfunctional .Not a good system by any standards.
Due to the massive disruption in Ukrainian power systems by recent Russian Drone swarms, Ukraine will now donate its wooden furniture to help keep the light on.
Trump is still the president and he controls foreign policies. Europe will do what he says or else just ask Denmark. They surrendered Greenland to avoid Trump's wrath.
Hodges means well but America and its citizens are declining rapidly, sad but true. Europe is balancing on the edge to follow this decline.. Add the detoriation of the worlds climate and security: we live in dangerous times.
Don't care about US politics , just hope the ordinary American can benefit in some way ... But I must say I much prefer V.V Putin , America needs him ... Can't wait to be in Russia ♥️🇷🇺♥️
The President of the USA has too much power. He is a prime minister, commander in chief, president, with veto power against anything he wants passed by congress and senate. Its a weakness of American democracy that needs to be fixed later.
Retired US General Ben Hodges argues that Trump's defeat in Congress could fundamentally change Washington's approach to Russia and Ukraine.
But he also warns that Trump remains commander-in-chief — and that Europe must continue strengthening its own security.
Could this election mark a turning point in America's relationship with Europe?
