The United States supports the resumption of Russian natural gas sales to Europe through Ukraine. The European Union strongly opposes such a move, arguing that purchases of Russian gas helped finance Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. In News in Depth, Marcin Zaborowski, TVP World Europe Editor, points to what he sees as a major U.S. contradiction. Washington first encouraged Europe to build a new energy policy independent of Russia, only to later advocate a return to the previous model. According to Zaborowski, the proposal is both unworkable and incompatible with current EU regulations. In his view, the Trump administration’s approach is driven by the prospect of short-term gains.
Zaborowski argues that the plan has virtually no chance of being implemented because Europe has spent years building a legal and regulatory framework designed to eliminate dependence on Russian energy. He also suggests that parts of the U.S. administration increasingly see themselves as intermediaries that could profit from restoring trade between Russia and Europe.
At the same time, Zaborowski believes that even a Democratic victory in the U.S. midterm elections would not prevent Donald Trump from pursuing his own foreign policy toward Russia. However, it could make it more difficult for his administration to push through certain initiatives that depend on congressional approval.
