The Octopus — Three Hearts, Blue Blood, and a Brain in Every Arm

It has three hearts — and one of them stops beating every time it swims. Its blood is blue, most of its brain lives in its arms, and it can change the colour and texture of its skin faster than you can blink, despite being colourblind. We take the octopus apart system by system: the three-heart plumbing, the copper-based blood, arms that taste what they touch, and intelligence tested in mazes, jars and escape acts. An animal so unlike us that biologists call it the closest thing to alien intelligence on Earth.
