Companies in Singapore are among those buying overseas forest carbon credits to offset their emissions. But Indonesia's wildfires have now reached areas linked to carbon-credit projects, threatening the very forests meant to help fight climate change. So if those forests burn, do the carbon credits still count? Who bears the cost of the carbon released? This week on CNA Explains, we investigate what happens when carbon credits go up in smoke and whether the safeguards are strong enough.
so much talk on reducing carbon footprints.... but Indonesia just released all those saved carbon back into the atmosphere in one fire, maybe even more 🙄🙄🙄😤😤
Has Singapore actually signed a binding Article 6 Implementation Agreement with Indonesia yet, or is it still just a non-binding MOU?<br>My understanding is it’s still just an MOU, meaning companies can't legally use these Indonesian credits to offset their actual Singapore carbon tax. If they are just buying on the voluntary market for corporate PR, a wildfire is just a private financial loss. But if the video implies these credits count for official tax compliance, verifying the actual legal treaty status is essential. Would love to see the team clarify this distinction.
This has been a major criticism of 'net zero' which looks like the work of a creative accountant. Atmospheric CO2 must first be stabilised but the UN''s jumped the gun & is trying to convince everyone that a 'return' to +1.5°C would mean a return of other 'pre-existing conditions'. It's all sounding a bit like a Black Friday special.
