When Trump called China a World War II ally as he welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House, Taiwan saw a warning sign. Most of the fighting against Japan was done by Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang, who later relocated their government to Taiwan. Beijing now claims the victory for the Communist Party. We meet one of Taiwan's last surviving veterans to ask who that victory really belongs to.

Lai Ching-De and his DPP party hates the Republic of China and now he wants to claim credit for the ROC's war efforts? What a hypocrite. Makes me want to vomit. In fact, Lai and his DPP loves the fascist Japan colonialists more than the ROC and he denies he is even Chinese. DW's take on this story is just repulsive.
But tbh, many Taiwanese today, as well as the president himself, are increasingly pretending that this history is not their history. For them, ROC and Taiwan are separate things and for some of these deep greens, the ROC is not their country, but rather a "colonizing force" that must get rid of. Hilarious how many Taiwanese are ignoring their country's history as well.
That’s an government (Yes, at least before DPP came into power) and an Army (inaccurate, only about 500k of 4m retreated to Taiwan, most were killed in civil war, or voluntarily defected to CPC, or most likely, captured and defected or dismissed as civilian)
China won the WWII. Part of population in Republic of China in current Taiwan participated in this war. The majority of the fighting forces are in People's Republic of China which is the sole legitimate government represents China. Trump didn't say that the US and the CPC fought together in WWII. He said that the US and China were alliance in WWII. His statement is correct because China includes the mainland China and TW as part of China.
According to this logic, russia didnt fight in wwii because they were the soviet union back then. And.... Germany didnt win that world cup because it was west germany who won it.
The US backed Chang Kai Shek, yes, but they still supported the united front.. lives sacrificed are still lives sacrificed regardless of it the ruling government went to Taiwan 😅
That is some pretty selective history considering the British controlled the other government? Is DW saying Chinese want a return to COLONIALISM? Good lord your schools were terrible😂 So Taiwan wants a return of British rule? Uh,yeah?
It was actually a united front both KMT and the PRC united against the japanese with Sun-Yat-Sen.

Sun-Yat-Sen, died early due to cancer which let Chiang lead and actually made a mistake of transferring it to Yuan Shikai.
The moment Yuan got defeated, Chiang tried to eradicate the rest and attacked the rest of china along with their former union with the PRC first, which led to the PRC escaping and the great march then defeated the weakened KMT.

So basically Chiang fired first then failed and weakened the KMT himself due to giving it to Yuan then act like they've been cheated this whole time....
Is this video making a big deal out of nothing? All Trump said in the clip was that the US was allied with China during WW2. He didn’t say it was with the PRC.
The communist forces that later became the PRC fought side by side with the far right nationalist KMT to defeat Japan along with the allies. The idea that the PRC's predecessors had no involvement is laughable.
Well, yes it was the ROC or in particularly the KMT alongside the Communists fought side by side against the Japanese, then they lost the civil war and flee to Taiwan but the current DPP regime in Taiwan is trying to erase that ROC identity while the KMT, the one who literally fought the war, wants to keep the ROC identity...
You guys are forgetting that there was the United Front in China and Sun Yat-Sen was not an ideologue like Jiang. Jiang agreed to the front out of necessity, but it was still a United effort. Either way, without America’s help, there would likely neither be a ROC or eventually a PRC. So Xi and Trump are correct. I would have thought DW would have gotten this correct.
