A book borrowed from the Kiama Library has been returned about 150 years after it was due.
The book was discovered inside a tea chest in a bricked fireplace during a renovation.
At the listed rate of three pence per week for every week the book is overdue, adjusted for inflation, the late fine is estimated to be $28,000.
Among the rules of the library listed inside the book are that anyone intoxicated was not allowed to borrow a book.
