President Cyril Ramaphosa says government will phase out the use of the green ID book, which he says has been exploited by undocumented migrants and criminal syndicates for identity theft.
He says the Department of Home Affairs will announce a cut-off date after which the green ID book will no longer be recognised as a valid form of identification.
Ramaphosa adds that officials who sell documents, facilitate illegal entry, or abuse their authority for personal gain are betraying the trust of South Africans and will face consequences. For more on this, we are now joined by the Deputy Director General, Operations Department of Home Affairs, Thulani Mavuso.
