Who were the Ancient Elamites, and what can DNA reveal about their long-lost ancestry? The civilization of Elam flourished in southwestern Iran and played an important role in the ancient Near East, interacting with Mesopotamian and Iranian populations for thousands of years.
In this documentary, we explore Elamite DNA, ancient Elamite ancestry, Elam genetics, ancient Iranian populations, Mesopotamian DNA, Persian ancestry, archaeological genetics, ancient DNA, and population history. We examine the available genetic evidence alongside archaeology and ancient history to understand where Elamite populations came from, how they interacted with neighboring peoples, and what may have happened to their genetic legacy over time.
From the ancient cities of Susa and Elam to later populations of the Iranian plateau, this story explores one of the most intriguing genetic mysteries of the ancient Near East.
IN THIS DOCUMENTARY YOU’LL DISCOVER:
What is known about Ancient Elamite ancestry
The genetic history of Elam and southwestern Iran
Connections between Elam and neighboring ancient populations
Possible links with Mesopotamian and Iranian populations
How ancient DNA is used to study vanished civilizations
What archaeology reveals about Elamite migration and interaction
How ancient populations contributed to later genetic diversity
What DNA can—and cannot—tell us about ancient identity
