Where did the ancient Israelites come from? A 3,200-year-old Egyptian inscription and genetic research offer fascinating clues.
The Merneptah Stele, dated around 1208 BCE, names Israel among peoples in Canaan. Archaeologists also document new highland settlements during the early Iron Age, suggesting that Israelite identity emerged within a changing regional landscape.
In 2020, researchers assembled genetic data from 93 Bronze and Iron Age individuals across nine southern Levant sites. Their findings revealed connections between local Neolithic ancestry and populations related to the Zagros or Caucasus.
However, those genomes were not securely identified as Israelite, and DNA cannot establish religious identity.
Explore the evidence, competing theories, and unanswered questions.
