It was “disappointing" that an Indonesian official had said Singapore's oxygen comes from their forests, said Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam.
Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday (Oct 19), Mr Shanmugam said the haze was affecting people's health and was caused by the bad behaviour of companies breaching regulations in Indonesia.
He also welcomed Indonesian President Prabowo's efforts to tackle the fires.

A mature, healthy forest is roughly in balance: it produces oxygen, but it consumes nearly the same amount over its natural lifecycle.

Therefore, mature forests do not generate a massive "surplus" of net oxygen that gets exported or "sent" across borders. Their true ecological value lies in storing massive amounts of carbon (acting as carbon sinks), regulating the water cycle, and protecting global biodiversity—not in acting as a localized oxygen tank for the planet.

Time to act.

Time to move beyond diplomatic formalities and take a firmer stance with the Indonesian government. If there are no meaningful consequences for its actions, what is to stop the same situation from happening again in 2027? Singapore needs to demonstrate that it is serious about protecting its interests through concrete action, not just words. It is time to move beyond rhetoric and show that our resolve is backed by action.

Demand an apology from Indonesia boss ! What's your next step boss if they don't apologise and retract their insulting mocking comments? We need more action not talking....talk and speech.... Action boss
