Tensions have escalated in Durban's Central Business District (CBD), where anti-immigration protesters and foreign nationals have clashed.
Law enforcement officers used stun grenades and teargas to disperse the volatile crowds.
Several shops and foreign-owned businesses have been broken into, looted or set alight.
The unrest follows an instruction by the Department of Home Affairs for offices nationwide to accept and process asylum applications from all migrants, including those who entered South Africa without a visa. The instruction has since been withdrawn.
SABC News reporter Ayanda Mhlongo reports from the Durban CBD.
