The current French student protests should not be confused with a movement created by either the political left or the right.

The protests emerged from concrete problems experienced by students themselves: shortages of teachers and substitutes, overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating school buildings, long school days, inequality between schools, and dissatisfaction with parts of the education system. The movement then spread from school to school and eventually across France.

It is true that La France Insoumise (LFI) strongly supports the protests and that many other actors on the French left are sympathetic to the students' demands. It is also true that parties on the right, particularly the National Rally (RN) and Les Républicains (LR), have been much more critical of the movement. But the Central-Right has let the situation become worse and worse over the past ten years.

And there is an important distinction:

A political party supporting a protest does not mean that the party created the protest, just as a political party opposing it does not make the protest a movement of the opposing side.

There is no good evidence that LFI organized or created this nationwide movement. The protesters are politically diverse, and many of them are minors who do not even have the right to vote yet. The movement arose around grievances within the education system rather than around a party platform.

LFI is trying to politically support and associate itself with an existing movement. The right, meanwhile, is largely opposing the protests and focusing on the blockades, disorder and violence associated with some demonstrations.

So describing these protests simply as a “left-wing uprising” is misleading. Describing them as a “right-wing rebellion against Macron, liberals or immigration” is even harder to reconcile with the protesters' stated demands and with the political parties that actually support or oppose them.

The more accurate description is a student-led protest movement over education and living conditions that has subsequently become politically contested. Different political parties are now trying to interpret, support, oppose or capitalize on it — but that is not the same thing as having created it.
