The federal opposition is proposing a policy to ease fuel prices during oil crises.
Coalition leader Angus Taylor wants to set a global oil price threshold of $100 per barrel for an automatic 50 per cent discount to the fuel excise to be triggered.
It's proposed that it would be paid for by cutting the tobacco excise to encourage smokers to spurn black market tobacco.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers says he is cynical about the viability of the proposal, citing concerns about its uncapped nature.
