Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took to the stage at the European Parliament one day after Ursula von der Leyen floated a dramatic idea: Canada as the EU's first "associate member." As Trump continues to talk about Canada becoming the 51st state, Ottawa appears to be moving closer to Europe. Trump has already suggested the proposal could be a "hostile act." Watch the speech and DW's analysis in our live stream.

Let us remember that Canada’s participation in both World Wars came through its historic links with Britain and the Commonwealth—not through the EU. Mark Carney’s account of Canada’s contribution is accurate, but any EU perception that it was somehow central to that history is mistaken.
It is essentially an American idea----they made it both politically possible and a necessary patch to a difficult situation. It is part of the new, worldwide industry founded by Trump's USA: Diversifying away from the USA economically, politically, and militarily.
Well the problem with attendance is that they are in Strasbourgh and that is a long way away from Brussels, where the EU is normally hanging out.
So likely, they cannot attende, as this might conflict with the normal goings on of the EU, and this is likely a separate initiative.
Also, Strasbourg is in France, and has both the free office space and the symbolicism to make it work.
And in Europe it is less about how large the crowd (~ your reproductive organ) is, but how large the message (~ your brain) is.
Giving you insight into Canadian people, we are a little embarrassed to have this light shining on us. We appreciate the support for sure, are grateful, but we are humble. We do not embrace celebrity. Having said that we know Carney is doing well for Canada.
Geography is not the issue; the European Union is already present on almost all continents through the overseas territories of France or Spain. In the case of Morocco, geography was merely a pretext for rejecting its bid, as Morocco is not a democratic country.
Truth helps us see where we are.
Trust gives us the courage to move toward one another again.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has said it all. Canada is proud of you Prime Minister.
On the topic of Geography, Malta is on the African Continent and Cyprus is on the Asian continent. Turkey, a candidate is also primarily an Asian country. The treaty doesn't say a country needs to be geographically IN EUROPE, it says it needs to be a European country. That can be assigned to many different dimensions, including cultural. On Culture, many European leaders have described Canada as already being closely aligned with European values and norms and being European in all but geography. As someone who studied the European Union, I don't think there is any such criteria blocking Canada from full EU membership and from the European side, this very much seems to be the sentiment.
Zero stakes have been raised for Canada. He has Trump scared witless. Trump was acting tough, while giving himself a way to back down on everything he just said there.
What do you mean Canada cannot join? Of course they can join EU. Norway is part of EU as a associate nember bjt whitout rights. So its possible. Plus if this coolaboration works well for EU and Canada 100% Canada will become a full member I mean why not? Europe loves Canada and Canada loves Europe.
This has nothing to do with America.
Everyone is desperate for real leadership, particularly the center to counter the growing political right represented by Trump. Carney's seriousness and intellect is the perfect antidote.
EU to Marc Carney ( in private )..."Listen Mark we have problem"... "We have too many poor people and we're wondering if you......"
Canadians and Europeans have shared values and history. Most Canadians welcome closer integration with the EU. We are stronger together. Btw who was the jerk chanting “USA, USA” when our Prime Minister was about to speak?
