German Chancellor Merz says CDU 'deeply shocked' by AfD election win

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday that his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was "deeply shocked" by its worst election defeat in decades after the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) scored a record win in Saxony-Anhalt's state election.

Merz vowed to continue economic reforms. The AfD won 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the state parliament's 83 seats, falling short of the absolute majority needed to govern alone. The result marked the first landslide victory by a far-right party in a German state election since the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949.
