Recent aviation incidents are raising questions about South Africa's readiness when things go wrong.
A burst tire on a Kenya Airways aircraft closed Cape Town International's runway for hours, while rugby flyovers were cancelled amid concerns over an Airlink passenger aircraft flying at a potentially unsafe altitude above a stadium of more than 55,000 people.
The incidents highlight wider concerns around emergency response, regulatory compliance, and airspace safety—and raise a crucial question: Is South Africa adequately prepared to prevent and respond to aviation emergencies?
We discuss this with Volker von Widdern, Director of Strategic Risk at Riskonet Africa.
