Between bad PR and caricatures, the real meaning of democratic socialism often gets lost.
Democratic socialism combines a democratic political system with public or cooperative control of the economy, whereas communism uses a centralized, one-party state to abolish private property.
Democratic socialism requires multi-party elections, civil liberties, and political pluralism. Communism historically operates under centralized, one-party authoritarian rule.
Democratic socialists want to reform or replace capitalism through existing democratic and electoral processes. Communists generally view revolution by the working class as necessary to overthrow capitalism.
Democratic socialists support public or worker ownership of major industries while keeping democratic institutions. Communism aims for total collective or state ownership in a classless, stateless society
What Mamdani is describing isn’t socialism. Most people would agree with what he’s saying. But his actual policies, like government-run grocery stores, are socialist policies that lead to inefficiency and worse outcomes for everyone.
I think socialism should be voluntary. Go to live in a country where you think it's just perfect first. And if you make a lot of money, you'll probs not want to go there. Just about any form of government could be better or work better but PEOPLE are the problem. They get greedy, envious, bitter, covetous, etc. and you can't stop them because people are inherently broken.
When an American talks about Socialism, they are talking about Government based Social Welfare and the more equitable distribution of the product of Capital, not actual Socialism.
Trevor what do you mean "do people understand what they've been told it means"? I watched Daily Show keep interviewing MAGA people and they can't even explain what socialism or communism is. Other than that it's bad. They haven't even been told what it is, other than that you can use it as an umbrella term for anything you don't like for no reason. They can't even conceptualize that a lot of things they like about USA is the socialism side of the system that's many times capitalistic in things that they don't like about USA.
Old Russian joke (probably poorly translated, but I don’t speak the language):

1st step: Socialism, 3rd step: Communism
Wait, what is 2nd step?
Alcoholism.
Most Americans consider Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the UK socialist countries which is ridiculous, the first rule of socialism is no Kings and these are all monarchies.
Americans of the United States are clueless…the people that know the system abuse it and the others that don’t know the system. Folks are not equally educated, not even remotely.
