Public transport enthusiasts, early commuters, politicians and other officials have turned out to mark the opening of the Southwest Metro line, which cost just under $23 billion.
More than 18,000 people boarded carriages at the new metro stations in the first five hours of operation.
This comes after more than two years of commuters using replacement pink buses while the 130-year-old T3 Bankstown line was converted to the new service.
