An apple is the round, edible fruit of an apple tree (Malus spp.). Fruit trees of the orchard or domestic apple (Malus domestica), the most widely grown in the genus, are cultivated worldwide. The tree originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found. Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Eurasia before they were introduced to the American continent by European colonists. Apples have cultural significance in many mythologies (including Norse and Greek) and religions (such as Christianity in Europe).

Apple'Cripps Pink' cultivarFlowers of M. domesticaScientific classificationKingdom:PlantaeClade:TracheophytesClade:AngiospermsClade:EudicotsClade:RosidsOrder:RosalesFamily:RosaceaeGenus:MalusSpecies:

M. domestica

Binomial nameMalus domestica

(Suckow) Borkh., 1803[1]

Synonyms[2][3]

M. communis Desf., 1768

M. pumila Mil.

M. frutescens Medik.

M. paradisiaca (L.) Apple trees grown without rootstocks tend to be larger and much slower to fruit after planting. Rootstocks are used to control the speed of growth and the size of the resulting tree, allowing for easier harvesting.

There are more than 7,500 cultivars of apples. Different cultivars are bred for various tastes and uses, including cooking, eating raw, and cider or apple juice production. Trees and fruit are prone to fungal, bacterial, and pest problems, which can be controlled by a number of organic and non-organic means. In 2010, the fruit's genome was sequenced as part of research on disease control and selective breeding in apple production.

The main problem is the chokehold the German economic gave itself of relying on Russian oil and gas. Russia has bought German politicians of both CDU and SPD to ensure Germany would rely on Russian energy for its industry. Basically all German allies told them this was a bad idea. Other paths were available. Diversify energy supplies through investment in green energy and nuclear (or at least do not shutdown nuclear plants before other sources are built up) this is the biggest failure of mainstream parties, greed and corruption led Germany to be dependent on Russian gas. Complete failure of CDU and now they are reaping what they sowed.

The European left must recognise this and advocate sovereign energy policy for the whole continent. Focus on developing green energy alternatives so we are not at the mercy of dictators from any part of the world. This is what the dictators fear the most. It is not a coincidence that all these goddamn far-right parties are funded and paid for by Russian and also far right American forces. A divided, nationalist Europe is easier to subjugate and corrupt.

I'd like to leave my notes about this, living in Germany... and approaching the vote in Berlin this week. I guess, like other parties in Europe, AfD met the expectations of those looking for a 'people against the elite' contrast. Even though AfD is itself elite and financed by elites, they set a different narrative in their communication. Meanwhile, all the other parties helped shape it, showing how much they 'care about listening to people' while promoting authoritarian behavior and banning free speech. No one is safe, as I don't think all voters are actually Nazis, but people who would shoot their neighbor anyway if they felt threatened. The real fascists are already ruling, the police have shown many times how they repress. Fuck the left parties who left all of us behind. I think we can over-emphasize this electoral result... It's very important to look at who lost votes. A bunch of right-wingers jumping from one right-wing party to another can be a bad thing, but it's likely a short-term trend. They will be just as disappointed by their new far-right party as they were by their mainstream right-wing party, and the far-right party suddenly has to moderate to keep their centre-right voters.
In Europe, for the most part, there isn't a lot of ideological movement, just a change in who is considered competent and/or wasting their time in office.
The bigger problem is that centrist parties will try to sway right-wingers to come back to the centre parties. But it's not exactly a fascist take-over unless they start undermining constitutional norms, which is not what 20% of voters in that state suddenly signed up for.

Are the afd fascist?
No. Not as a party.

Fascism is not a swear word for “right wing I hate.” Historically it meant a revolutionary nationalist movement that wants to smash parliamentary democracy, build a one-party state around a leader, use street violence as politics, and sell a myth of national rebirth after decay. Mussolini. Hitler. Iron Guard. That package.

The AfD does not have that package.

It was founded in 2013 by economists pissed about euro bailouts. It wins seats in elections. It sits in the Bundestag. It does not have an SA. It does not call for banning other parties and hanging a Führer over the Reichstag. Alice Weidel runs around calling the party conservative and libertarian, which is marketing, but they still play the electoral game. That is the difference between a radical right protest party and fascism.

What they actually are is right-wing populist and, in large parts, far-right nationalist. Nativist. Anti-mass-migration. “The people vs the elites.” Remigration. An ethnic idea of the German Volk that German intelligence says clashes with the constitution’s human dignity clause. That is why the BfV watches them and why some state chapters are labeled confirmed extremist. That is ugly and serious. It is still not 1933.

The overlap with the old far right is real in spots. Björn Höcke has used banned Nazi-era slogans and got fined for it. A German court said you can legally call Höcke a fascist because of his pattern of speech. Roger Griffin, who actually studies fascism, has said the old Höcke “Flügel” current looks fascist in its vision of national rebirth even if they cannot pull off a revolution. Gauland’s “birdshit” line about the Nazi years, Krah’s SS remarks, the habit of poking Holocaust memory — that is not accidental. Those people are not liberals who got lost.

But the NPD was the party that openly lived in that world. Tiny, skinhead, banned-twice-almost. The AfD ate their voters by wearing suits and talking electricity prices and crime instead of Sieg Heil. That is why Marine Le Pen’s crowd even kicked AfD MEPs at one point for being too Third-Reich-adjacent. Other European nationalists think some of these guys are too hot.

So: fascist party? No. Far-right party with a nationalist-extremist wing and a pile of members who cannot stop flirting with the worst parts of German history? Yes. Calling the whole thing fascist is how you empty the word until it means nothing. Then when a real one shows up you have no language left.

The left in Germany — SPD, Greens, and Die Linke — just spent years running the place and the results are sitting right there in the numbers. Voters noticed.

The Ampel coalition under Scholz (SPD + Greens + FDP) took over in late 2021. By 2023 Germany was the only G7 economy shrinking. It shrank again in 2024. Industrial production ended up almost 9% below where it was when they walked in. Electricity prices for households were among the highest in Europe. Competitiveness ranking dropped. Bureaucracy compliance costs for companies and people more than doubled. VW started cutting tens of thousands of jobs. That is not “global headwinds.” That is policy plus bad timing meeting a country that already had expensive energy and a fat welfare state.

Biggest self-inflicted wound was energy. The Greens finished Merkel’s nuclear phase-out in April 2023 — while Russia had already cut the gas. They shut the last three reactors in the middle of a war and an energy shock. Then they tried to force heat pumps on millions of old houses with the Heizungsgesetz. People called it the heat hammer for a reason. A new gas boiler was cheap. A heat pump in a poorly insulated 1960s building was 20-30k euros and often didnt even work well. Massive backlash. Farmers blocked roads. The law got watered down then half-scrapped by the next government. You do not win working-class voters by telling a 60-year-old in a village he has to rip out his heater or freeze.

Migration is the other one they never wanted to touch. Merkel opened the door in 2015. The left and Greens spent years treating any talk of numbers or integration as racism. Germany took in a huge share of Europe’s asylum seekers for a decade. Official BKA data keeps showing the same pattern: certain origin groups — Syrians and Afghans especially — are massively overrepresented as suspects in violent crime and sexual offenses compared to their share of the population. That is not “far-right talking points.” That is the federal crime office. Housing, schools, and welfare got strained. People in the east and in poorer western cities felt it first. Then they voted AfD.

Look at the 2025 election. SPD got 16.4%. Worst result in the history of the Federal Republic. Lowest since the 1880s. They lost their old worker base — AfD was pulling close to 40% of workers in some breakdowns. Greens dropped too and lost a chunk of the young. Die Linke bounced back a bit among students and cities by yelling about rents and “the rich,” but they are still the party that grew out of the old East German SED. A lot of Germans in the east remember what that actually delivered.

The left’s problem is they talk like the country is a seminar on climate justice and historical guilt while the factories leave, the bills go up, and neighborhoods change faster than institutions can handle. They treat energy as a moral project instead of a reliability and price problem. They treat borders as a vibe. Working people got tired of being told they were the problem.

Does that mean the CDU is brilliant? No. Merkel owned a lot of the 2015 decision and the slow nuclear exit too. But the left governed through the pain years and doubled down on the same ideas. That is why they got wrecked at the ballot box. People can see the difference between a lecture and a heating bill.

The NPD was the real leftover Nazi-adjacent party after the war. Not some vague “far right,” the actual one that kept the old cadres and the old ideas.

Founded 28 November 1964 in Hanover. They merged the dying Deutsche Reichspartei (DRP) with scraps of other right-wing groups like the Deutsche Partei and the expellee party BHE. A lot of the organizers had NSDAP membership cards from the 30s and 40s. First chairman was Friedrich Thielen, a respectable-looking front man. Real power sat with Adolf von Thadden from the DRP.

They caught a wave in the late 60s. Economy slowed, Grand Coalition of CDU and SPD left no conservative opposition, and suddenly the NPD looked like the protest option. Between 1966 and 1968 they got into seven state parliaments. Best result was 9.8% in Baden-Württemberg 1968. In the 1969 federal election they hit 4.3% and missed the 5% hurdle by a hair. That was their high-water mark. After that it was downhill.

Internal fights, Thadden quit in 1971, the party turned into a club of old men and skinheads that normal voters wouldnt touch. Votes collapsed. They spent the 70s and 80s as a tiny, heavily watched extremist group.

After reunification they got a second wind in the east. Saxony 2004: 9.2%. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2006: 7.3% and actual seats. Udo Voigt ran it more openly radical. Youth wing Junge Nationaldemokraten was full of the usual suspects. Still never broke through nationally.

Germany tried to ban them twice.

First attempt 2001-2003 fell apart because the Verfassungsschutz had so many paid informants inside the leadership that the court couldnt tell what was the party’s real line and what the state had planted. Case thrown out on procedure.

Second try 2013-2017. The Constitutional Court in January 2017 said yes, the NPD is anti-constitutional. They want an ethnically defined Volksgemeinschaft, an authoritarian national state, they shit on human dignity and democracy. But they are too weak and irrelevant to actually threaten the system, so no ban. Brutal but legally consistent. Later they got cut off from public party funding until 2030.

Then the AfD showed up in 2013. That’s what killed them. AfD took the same anti-immigration, anti-establishment vote but without the bomber jackets and Hitler salutes. People who were angry about migrants and Merkel could vote AfD and still tell themselves they werent voting for the Nazi party. NPD stayed the stigmatized cartoon villains. Their last state parliament seats disappeared. Membership dropped to around 3,000. Federal results now are usually 0.1-0.3% or they dont even bother running.

In 2023 they rebranded as “Die Heimat” to try and wash the name. Didnt work. There are even splinter groups still using the old NPD letters in a couple states. They still hold demos and get monitored, but as a political force they are dead. The AfD ate their electorate and left them with the hardcore remnants nobody else wants.

That’s the whole arc: 1960s protest party that almost made it, then decades as the official neo-Nazi punching bag, then finished off by a more electable competitor. They never escaped the 1945 stain and they never professionalized. AfD did both, which is why one is in the Bundestag with 150+ seats and the other is a footnote.

The Nazi party (NSDAP) got banned and dissolved after 1945. There is no legal successor. The AfD was founded in 2013 by economics professors and ex-CDU guys who were pissed that Merkel kept saying the euro bailouts were “alternativlos.” First platform was basically “stop bailing out Greece and let’s talk about leaving the euro.” That’s it.
After the 2015 migrant wave it shifted hard toward anti-mass-immigration, “remigration,” Islam-critical, and German-first stuff. That’s why it exploded in the east. It is now the second-biggest party in the Bundestag and just won a state election in Saxony-Anhalt with around 40%+. German domestic intelligence (BfV) has some state chapters classified as confirmed right-wing extremist and the federal party as a suspected case because of the ethnic/völkisch idea of who counts as German. That’s a real thing, not just media noise.
Does that make them the old Nazi party? Fuck no. Historians who actually study this (not activists) point out the obvious differences: no SA street fighters murdering opponents, no open call to abolish democracy and replace it with a Führer state, no program to exterminate Jews. They run in elections and sit in parliament. They have a small “Jews in the AfD” group and officially say they reject National Socialism. Alice Weidel even tried the dumb line that Hitler was a communist to distance the party. That’s how hard they try to dodge the label.
What they do have is a bunch of people who keep poking the history bear. Gauland called the 12 Nazi years “a speck of bird shit” in 1,000 years of German history. Höcke got fined twice for using the old SA slogan “Alles für Deutschland.” They want school history to be “more Bismarck, less Hitler” and they bitch about the “guilt cult” and “narrow” Holocaust-focused remembrance culture. That’s why critics scream Nazi 24/7. Some of those statements are reckless as hell in Germany. Some of the comparisons are just the usual lazy smear because “nationalist + Germany = Nazi” is the easiest attack in that country.
The actual leftover neo-Nazi party was the NPD. Tiny, openly extremist, and now basically dead because the AfD ate their voters by wearing suits instead of bomber jackets.
So no, the AfD is not “the former Nazi party.” It’s a 13-year-old right-wing populist party that some of its own members keep giving ammunition to people who want to call them that. Big difference.

The German leftist scene is also a complete clusterfck. Part of them still side with Israel and scream "Antisemitism" every opportunity they get. And while the party is still undecided wether they wanna support a g€n0c!de or not they're losing their touch with the working class more and more
