Students protest in Jakarta over forest fires, President Prabowo's policies

Hundreds of students took to the streets of Jakarta on Wednesday (Oct 28), protesting rising prices, subsidy cuts and the government's response to ongoing forest fires.

Protesters from universities and non-profits marched down major thoroughfares where many local and foreign companies are headquartered, carrying banners critical of President Prabowo Subianto's policies.

The demonstration coincided with Youth Pledge Day, marking the 1928 declaration of national unity that defined the national identity.

Demonstrators were met with heavy police presence, which tried to block them from reaching their gathering point at the iconic Hotel Indonesia roundabout. #indonesianews
