François Picard welcomes Igor Mladenovic, a French-Serbian sports writer, sports business analyst and former football commentator based in Luxembourg. For Mladenovic, the backlash in China over Kylian Mbappé's playful reference to a meme depicting him in the likeness of Mao Zedong illustrates a dilemma of the digital age: How a seemingly innocuous anecdote from a football superstar can escalate into a geopolitical firestorm.

The meme is really funny and yes, Mao is surely a dictator. China government periodically does something like this, just to direct attention or show “power” internally. I feel sorry for Mbappe😂, and I hope he is aware that Chinese people are not necessarily feeling the same way as the government does.
Anyone who takes money from China already has ethical problems. Apologising for a joke about a murdering Dictator shows that he has no principles. The CCP does not even care about its own citizens. 🤔
This very network would have been outraged and critical if this meme was of another person revered by millions if not billions, it wouldnt have been a off the cuff remark, but irresponsible, inflammatory and so on
A sure sign of an authoritarian regime: When the authoritarians can't take a joke nor shrug at something trivial. Everything must always be a big deal and they MUST insert themselves into it.
This is not a "cultural misunderstanding" he just came to blows with a dictatorship. In in other words, dictatorships doing dictatorship things. Chinese people like to make fun of Mao, when they have the chance to - as they did in Hong Kong and do in Taiwan.
I saw many comments saying china is sensitive and what he did is no big deal. no. that is not ok. business class lesson no.1: don't talk about politics or religions ,especially when you have business interests with them. it is simple and straightforward. don;t know what's going on with nowadays people.
Typical reaction of extremist governments. Communist (North Korea, China, Venezuela, Cuba) and fascist (Russia, USA, Iran and the islamic states) regimes alike will react like this. I normally say that you can choose which road you take (right or left) but inevitably you get to the same point, after a while.
