Dr Sheets may be an expert in economics but he is not on AI. To suggest that the EU should not develop its own sovereign AI model layer stack and instead remain dependent on US big-tech company to supply it because otherwise it will remain 10 years behind technologically is a moronic statement. The EU already has access to an open weight LLM in Mistral a French company. There are other open weight and a few open source models already available that the EU can access or copy and train and develop at relatively low cost. Also a sovereign owned model layer will ensure that vast amounts of money for usage will stay within the EU and not flow to the US. Within 5 years, the EU with a UK and Canada joint venture could well be ahead of the US. With sovereignty comes trade barganing power as well. That doesn't mean that there cant be a parallel focus on adoption. Uts not a mutually exclusive choice as Dr Sheets seems to imply. Unfortunately, 99.9% of our jouranalists have not educated themselves in AI so that they can dig deeper and challenge ideas or positions. Its a blight on their profession.

Unfortunately an American accent on European issues reduces the speaker's credibility these days. I watched a video by a young woman who is actually living in Paris at the moment. Her explanations came from talking to people she ran into at the protest and also to friends and neighbours. Their point is that there is a fundamental difference between the American dream and the French dream. The American dream is to become a billionaire. The French dream is to have a beautiful comfortable life.

I think Australia is closer to the French dream, the Australian dream being a house on a quarter-acre block (as it was defined in the 20th century). These days maybe these days it’s more likely an apartment in a nice community. We are definitely more European than American in this way.

lazy institutional analysis, people are protesting against military keynesianism and AI and this guys solution is to go harder on both.

one would have to wonder how much exposure Citi has to both
