I grew up non-denominational Christian and was not allowed to believe in the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy or Santa. I was not allowed to participate in Halloween. A couple times I begged my mom to let me dress up for the costume parade at school and she only let me dress up as an angel. I was only allowed to listen to classical, oldies or Christian music until I got a car and had control of my own radio.

My mom waited until I was an adult to leave my dad for a woman, renounce God and practice Wicca.

Meanwhile, my husband and I did all the normal holiday stuff with our kids and they are very normal, God-loving young adults now.

There's something psychologically and spiritually good for people to watch true crime stories (like what we've been doing watching your content about Charlie) precisely because they start out in disorder and chaos and upside down world and then when the crime is SOLVED, justice and order are restored! Then all is right with the world again. We need this. (I don't watch horror either, but I understand the impulse.)

✝️ — Candace I can't agree. Listen, it's not about being AFRAID of horror. It's about being OBEDIENT to God and guarding what we allow into our hearts, minds, eyes, and ears.

God repeatedly instructs us to reject fear, guard our hearts, and deliberately focus our minds on what is righteous, pure, lovely, and pleasing to Him.

📖 What does Scripture say?

1. Philippians 4:8 — Think on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, admirable, and praiseworthy. God gives us a standard for what should occupy our minds.

2. Proverbs 4:23 — "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." What we continually take in can influence our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

3. Psalm 101:3 — "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes." We should be intentional about what we choose to watch and entertain.

4. 2 Timothy 1:7 — "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Why deliberately feed our minds with things that cultivate terror, anxiety, or darkness?

5. 2 Corinthians 10:5 — We are instructed to bring "into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." Not every thought deserves our attention, agreement, or permission to remain.

6. Romans 12:2 — "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." What we repeatedly consume can influence how we think and live.

‼️ THE BOTTOM LINE

As Christians, we don't avoid things that glorify terror, evil, and darkness because we're afraid of them. We avoid them because we desire to honor and obey our Heavenly Father.

We cannot continually fill our minds with darkness while expecting those influences to have no effect on our thoughts and spiritual well-being.

God calls us to be intentional about what we watch, what we listen to, what we dwell upon, and which thoughts we choose to entertain.

It's not about living in FEAR. It's about walking in DISCERNMENT, OBEDIENCE, and HOLINESS.

And remember, Scripture doesn't explicitly prohibit every fictional horror story. Christians may differ in their convictions about particular movies.... BUT..... the biblical principle remains: Just because something is PERMISSIBLE doesn't mean it's BENEFICIAL (1 Corinthians 10:23).

We don't have to expose ourselves to darkness to prove we're not afraid of it.

Our goal isn't simply to avoid what is evil. It's to fill our hearts and minds with what draws us closer to CHRIST!

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." — Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) 🙏🏼

THE END

The anti Halloween sentiment that the holiday is evil ignores that it's based on ancient Irish harvest time tradition. Yes evil has been added by some to the holiday. But it's based on the belief that during the end of the harvest time the vail between this world and the afterlife gets thin and it's possible for someone who had passed away to come back and walk the earth for a night. If you had wronged someone who had passed, they were able to come back on this night and get revenge on you. In order to keep them from finding you, you could wear a disguise. You could pretend to be one of them so they'd leave you alone. That evolved into Halloween in the US. So is calling Halloween evil just insulting another culture's beliefs? I knew a Greek Orthodox family who owned a coney island restaurant. They were Christian. But they had murals of ancient Greek Gods, Goddesses and scenes from Greek fables painted in the walls of the restaurant. They didn't worship these Gods and Godesses, but they were part of their ethnic heritage. Kind of the same with Halloween.

Her entire argument is easily debunked by people like me, who are Christian and love horror and true crime, and who simply don't get scared by it. Horror movies/series/books, true crime podcasts and documentaries, spooky stories and creepypastas, none of that scares me. It in fact fascinates me! Some horror games may scare me a little, but that's because gaming as a medium has an edge above all the other forms of entertainment in the sense that it puts you at the centre of it all, so emotions and experiences there may be a little heightened but that's also completely normal. And she's also completely ignoring the fact that exposure therapy is also a thing. Typically in most cases, the more you expose yourself to something you're afraid of, the less you tend to fear it. Now what? Beyond this, I make Candace's words my own (minus the nightmare bit, I don't get nightmares ever lol). So yeah, refuted in 2 seconds.

If your faith is so weak you can’t get through a horror film without your entire world being flipped upside down, that’s your problem. Being Christian means that no matter what, at your core, you know God will always prevail and make things right. Scary movies don’t instill long term fear. And whatever fear you may get by watching it for an hour goes away rather quickly. Candace, I respect you and appreciate your intelligence and analytical thinking. HOWEVER, I worry that horror--evil and scary content--in general ARE tools that the devil DOES employ to gain access to our souls. Catholicism instructs us to "avoid the near occasion of sin" and to never invite, communicate with, or otherwise interact with the devil. Yes. Evil exists. But to purposely engage in that which is horrific is not being courageous but rather is turning away from the gifts of the Holy Spirit...courage, wisdom, fear of [offending] the Lord, etc. The fact that horror films give you nightmares is evidence that the demon has penetrated you subconscious as a starting point for taking over your soul--unguarded, unhumble, haughty. True this young lady's interpretation of "Do not fear" is backward..that is, God is not "commanding" us to not fear, but is inviting us to lean on Him for strength and help. Christianity should not facilitate fear is correct precisely because it is a direct invitation to the devil, who is to be feared as the Father of lies, a murder and a thief from the beginning.

Look, she didn’t explain things properly but she’s right . I know people think it’s just harmless entertainment, but I reckon we need to talk about what we’re actually inviting into our homes. Watching horror films or blasting certain dark music isn’t just about having a bit of fun—spiritually, it’s literally rolling out the red carpet for demonic forces to come and wreck your life.
The spiritual realm is completely real. Demons are genuinely drawn to specific frequencies, repetitive chanting, and even dodgy occult objects. Scripture explicitly warns us about this in Deuteronomy 7:26, basically saying if you bring a cursed, detestable object into your house, you end up cursed just like it. Whether it's a book on the occult or some creepy portrait with a dark vibe, you're giving the enemy a legal right to occupy your space.
It works both ways, though. Music is intensely spiritual because we are spiritual beings. Think about when you put proper worship music on in your flat—suddenly the whole atmosphere shifts, you’re in total awe of God, and you just want to pray. It’s not just a random emotional high! You see it in 1 Samuel 16:23 too, where every time that bloke Saul was tormented by an evil spirit, David would play his harp and the demon would literally pack its bags and leave.
So if worship activates the Holy Spirit, heavy rock or horror movies absolutely give the devil a foothold (Ephesians 4:27). And once those doors are wide open, that’s when the chaos starts in a family. We’re talking sudden sickness, mental health struggles, financial ruin, constant rowing at home, and marriages ending in divorce. Even severe bondages and addictions take hold. Honestly, it’s just not worth the risk. We’ve got to guard our gates and keep our homes holy. So when you open yourself up to demonic spirits, you’re not being courageous, the presence of God leaves you when you touch the accursed object, and you loose the protection and devils will destroy you , devils do not fear us , they fear Gods presence and we can’t confront demonic spirits naked without Gods protection , it’s very dangerous.

I have always hated horror but when I was young I felt I had to watch them with friends. It’s been years since I’ve watched one though and I never will again. I feel like they are too evil and bring nothing good to me.

I personally do not like horror films, nor violent, or even secular music. I’ve lived through a lot of trauma and I just do not like to be reminded. Also, I have been made new in Christ Jesus 🙌🏼 I believe that what I see, hear, and surround myself with should be Christ like. To each their own, I only hope to be a good influence on others but I don’t judge their choices.

Scripture does however support this, “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways" Psalms 119:37 "Pay attention to what you hear. With whatever measure you use, it shall be measured to you" Mark 4:24 "Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light..." Luke 11:34

I don't think Jesus is a fan of horror and would enjoy watching such media with us (if He were just chilling with us). But ALSO, I agree with Candace that we don't need to be afraid of it and we shouldn't condemn/judge others about it. Peace!

I agree that christians shouldn't celebrate halloween, and i hate to admit that i agree with ABS on anything.
But my issue with halloween is that its death centered and the bible does say we need to watch out for those obsessed with death. I also feel this applies to horror films. And anything else that is death centered.
It makes sense to me because Jesus is about life, love, truth, and beauty. There is no need to hide behind a costume, because He is true. There is no need to trick, because He is love. There is no reason to be obsessed with or fear death, because He is life. There is no reason to obsess over ugly things, because His goodness is beautiful.
ABS had a great opportunity to discuss THIS but instead she had some shakey a$$ argument that you shouldn't participate in horror/halloweeen because the bible says do not fear.
That argument makes zero sense. Zilch. Nada.
And just because you don't participate in these types of things, doesn't give you the right to pretend they don't exist. When you acknowledge the goodness of God, you also acknowledge there are some evil powers working against Him at all times. And vice versa.
Allie really fumbled the bag. And Candace is right that not acknowledging the existence of evil is bubblegum Christianity and it is not real.

Candace, get familiar with the Bible. There is some truth to this , not all , but some.
