The yearly inflation rate climbed to 3.7%, up from 3.4% in August and above the 3.6% forecast. Core inflation (excluding food and energy) rose 0.3% from the previous month and 2.6% over the past year. Gas prices jumped 9.1% in September, driving more than half of the monthly inflation increase. Costs also accelerated for non-energy items like car repairs, doctor visits, plane tickets, computer hardware/software, apparel (men's and boys' apparel rose 1.1%), and a record 4.2% jump in toy prices. Housing and rent costs increased by 0.4% in September.
