Ep64 The 100th Anniversary of Hangeul Day — A Dictionary: An Ambassador Made of Paper

In 1911, despite Korea being under Japanese colonial rule, work began on the first Korean-language dictionary, giving rise to the manuscript known as Malmoi.
Yet even before the Malmoi manuscript, there were bilingual dictionaries that introduced Hangeul to the wider world. These included dictionaries written in French, Russian, and English.
These modern-era bilingual dictionaries served as diplomats on paper, introducing Hangeul—the writing system of Korea—and helping connect Korea with the rest of the world.
On the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangeul Day, we explore the diplomatic and historical significance of these dictionaries.


Ep64 한글날 100주년 - 종이로 된 외교관, 사전

1911년 일제강점기였음에도 불구하고 최초의 우리말 사전 집필이 시작되고 말모이 원고가 탄생한다. 그런데 이 말모이 원고에 앞서 이미 한글을 알리는 이중어 사전들이 있었다. 바로 프랑스어, 러시아어, 영어로 풀이한 사전들이다. 한국의 고유 문자인 한글을 알리고, 한국과 세계가 소통할 수 있도록 외교관의 역할을 했던 근대 이중어 사전들. 한글날 제정 100주년을 맞아 이 사전들의 외교사적 가치를 알아본다.
