The new S$118 million bioeconomy initiative highlights a massive disconnect between state spending priorities and the daily financial realities of regular Singaporeans. While everyday citizens face an unyielding squeeze from rising costs—including a record-breaking 7% hike in transport fares and the compounding impact of a recent 17% spike in household electricity tariffs—billions in public funds are consistently directed toward high-risk corporate experiments.
⠀
This S$118M injection is just a fraction of a much larger, systemic long-term allocation. We are looking at a staggering S$28 billion spent under the RIE2025 framework, another S$37 billion locked in for RIE2030, and a recent S$1 billion addition to Startup SG Equity to cushion deep-tech firms.
⠀
Despite over S$66 billion in public resources funneled into these private-sector ecosystems, these massive corporate investments produce no tangible cost-of-living relief for the average household. Instead of offering structural protection against basic inflation, taxpayer money is deployed to absorb corporate risk for niche industries that primarily benefit a selective elite, leaving regular workers to manage skyrocketing everyday bills with temporary, short-term relief vouchers.
